Bad Tölz – Outgoing Red and White coach Sebastian Wagner speaks of an epidemic year. Many injured players repeatedly tore big holes in the player ceiling of SC Rot-Weiß Bad Tölz. The outgoing coach Sebastian Wagner therefore speaks of an epidemic year, which rightly ended with the relegation to the district class.

After only one year in the district league, SC Rot-Weiß Bad Tölz has said goodbye to the district class again. Until the last matchday of the relegation round, when the Tölzers lost 1-3 to TuS Holzkirchen, it was a matter of urgency; one point would have been enough to qualify for the relegation play-offs. Regardless, Sebastian Wagner had informed the club early on that he would not be available as coach for another season. In an interview, the coach looks back on joy, frustration and the new game mode of a nerve-wracking season. Assistant coach and defender Adrian Ackermann is also hanging up his football boots and will only cheer on the team as a fan. Wagner's successor has already been decided: Klaus Fahrner (46, formerly ESV Penzberg) will drum up the red and white kickers for the first preparatory session in the last week of June.

Hello Mr. Wagner, has the disappointment about the descent subsided a little?

The disappointment wasn't that big, because if you're realistic and also take into account this unbelievable injury misfortune, relegation was to be expected. Rather, the disappointment was that, despite the numerous setbacks, there would have been more in it for us than we got out of it.

What was the team's reaction after the 1-3 defeat against Holzkirchen?

Dejected, because with a draw we could have played relegation. And the opportunities were there. After our 1-2 goal, we had some really good chances on the counter to equalise. But I think that the guys can assess the situation correctly. Next season, the personnel situation will not improve due to injuries and departures.

These are all long-term failures...

This was an absolute epidemic season. Sebastian Horwath and Benedikt Muck have torn cruciate ligaments, Shpend Sahiti suffered a shoulder joint injury while helping out in the second. Max von Sazenhofen will probably not be able to play at all after his serious muscle injury in his thigh. Marinus Estner's old injury has worsened and Adrian Ackermann has ended his career.

And Fatih Kocyigit, the linchpin of the Tölzer offensive, has ambitions to move to BCF Wolfratshausen.

That's already in the bag. Fatih thanked the club at our end-of-season celebration and said goodbye to the team. That was a clean thing.

Some of the actions he allowed himself as a leading player were not quite as clean, such as the red card for assault against Altenstadt.

He knows himself that he has room for improvement in terms of appearance and attitude. We couldn't do without him. But the higher the league, the sooner such things will be sanctioned. At the BCF, he will no longer be able to afford such antics.

When it came to sanctions, your hands were usually tied due to the small squad.

Unfortunately, I had to make sure that I brought eleven people together.

You usually look at the last game, but that doesn't do justice to a season with 24 games. Which point losses annoyed you the most?

I'll leave the autumn round out of the equation, because we were miles away from the music. Reaching the championship round was illusory. In the relegation round, the 2-5 defeat at home to Weßling stands out negatively. We were in control of the game for 60 minutes and were 2-0 up, and then we gave everything away in 30 minutes. Add to that the red card for Sahiti and yellow-red for Kocyigit – that was certainly a sticking point in the relegation round.

The questionable Pöckinger game relocation is also likely to be heavy on your stomach.

However! That still gnaws at me. Also because of this experience, I say: 'I want to deal with all the sh... have nothing more to do.' That was an absolute impudence, it has nothing to do with fair play anymore. That was simply fraud, and the Bavarian Football Association allowed it to happen. The artificial turf pitch in Pöcking would have been playable even without a sprinkler system (a defect had been cited as the reason for the unplayability and relocation, editor's note).

But you can't talk about a 0-5 defeat, or blame it on the BFV.

There is no question that we had no chance in that catch-up game in Pöcking and rightly lost 0-5. But there are a lot more things that play into the story.

What is it?

Our playgroup leader (Heinz Eckl, editor's note) also saw an advantage as an Altenstadt player because TSV Altenstadt was two points ahead of us at the time. If we had been scored for not coming, we would have been one point ahead of them and would have had a completely different pressure situation before the last few games. Those are the two things that were decisive for us to be relegated. That's a fact. The BFV has once again made a decision against red-white, even if they talk their way out of it with some statutes.

There were also highlights in the second half of the season. No one but you won 5:2 at leader Weßling. What were the highlights from your point of view?

That was an outstanding fighting performance, and in the second half it was also really good football. With this victory, we also earned our way to the final against Holzkirchen. The 2-0 home win against Pöcking was a commanding performance, the only game in which we didn't concede anything more than 90 minutes at the back. The 3-0 win in Holzkirchen was also a strong performance.

You've been struggling with the new game mode for a while. Keyword: long away trips. What is your verdict now that the season is over?

I have not revised my negative opinion. We came to terms with it and arranged the long away trips through sponsors.

When the model was presented in Raisting, there was also talk of suspense until the end.

The tension was there, but all the pro-arguments listed did not materialize. Little by little, I've realised that you're under enormous pressure from the first matchday. As a result, the quality of the games will be worse. Fellow coaches have also confirmed that to me. And it can't be that I have to follow the two parallel groups in addition to my group and hope for corresponding results, then that shouldn't be decisive for the performance of my own team. There are many things that are not optimally solved.

Speculate: Would it have been possible to stay in the league under the old mode?

No, you have to be that honest and fair. The level in the first half of the season with Otterfing, Kreuth and Lenggries was definitely better, they were great games.

Looking back, what would you do differently?

I didn't have that many decisions to make as a coach. I had to make sure that I could get eleven players together. About Reserve and Old Gentlemen I grazed everything. And that's where it's more challenging when you have to motivate people extra than when you have a few players up your sleeve who step on the gas as substitutes. We didn't score in the decisive situations. Maybe I have to be blamed for the fact that we should have worked more on converting chances.

You told the club's management during the preparation for the second half of the season that it would stay with this one season. What were the reasons for this early decision?

Last summer, I was persuaded to take on the coaching job rather than wanting to do it on my own initiative. Now I'm 36 years old and I've been on the football pitch for over 30 years. That's why it's mainly for private reasons. A side aspect that didn't really appeal to me was the attitude and preparation of the team, that's what I told the lads. And in the end it was the friction with the association, but you're powerless, and I just don't have the nerve for that anymore.

Will you remain with the club in any capacity?

I had thought about helping out a little more. But I notice that my knee can't handle it anymore. That's why I'll only be a spectator and a red and white fan in the future and will make a few comments on the sidelines (laughs).

Were there any external enquiries?

No, and even if I had, I wouldn't have answered them positively.

Do you have any tips for your successor Klaus Fahrner?

Yes, but I tell him that in private. It's supposed to be fun, because the guys aren't wrong. Perhaps, as an outsider, he will find the levers to get more out of the team. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him.
