24 Hours of Le Mans: LeBron James gave the start of the centenary race

Highlights: LeBron James is the official starter of the 91st edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Brad Pitt, Rafael Nadal and Alain Delon have also started the race. The race is being held in France for the first time since the 1950s. The French flag was lowered at the start of the race by Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. It is the fourth time the French flag has been lowered in the race's 91-year history.

The basketball legend (38) was the official starter of the 91st edition on Saturday.

For its centenary, the legendary race of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1923-2023) had called on a starter of choice. It was LeBron James, basketball superstar, who was responsible for lowering the French flag and giving the start of the 91st edition, marked by the return of several historic teams such as Peugeot, Ferrari or Porsche.

After Brad Pitt (2016), Rafael Nadal (2018) and Alain Delon (1996), the Los Angeles Lakers player (38 years old, 2m06) joins the long list of internationally renowned starters.

There's nothing like seeing and experiencing sport at its highest level, James enthused in a statement released earlier this week. It is an honour for me to participate in this historic moment in motorsport and to contribute to the celebration of the centenary of one of the greatest sporting events in the world. I can't wait to kick off this iconic race and see the world-class drivers compete on the iconic Le Mans track.

Make this moment mythical, "replied Emmanuel Macron on his Twitter account. After a brief exchange with Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, LeBron James received the French flag from the hands of the army, as is tradition, before lowering it to give the start.
