J.R. Smith had an illustrious basketball career. He won two NBA championships, and once more he was named Sixth Man of the Year. On every team he played, Smith was an important component, largely due to his shooting abilities. But off the court, Smith was a little less calculated, he used to hang out in strip clubs, and generally lived a particularly colorful life.
After his retirement, J.R. Smith realized the dangers of excess luxury and began to regret his mistakes. In 2021, he enrolled at AT&T State University, and in his first semester managed to get excellent grades. He was as proud of this achievement as he was of his NBA titles. All of which shows Smith's efforts to improve himself and become more mature than before.
Earlier this week, Smith was a guest on the "I'm an Athlete" podcast, where he expressed regret for his behavior while he was an active player: "I was able to feed my community 10 times the money I paid for being late for the bus. But we'd rather spend $60,000 in one night at a strip club than go pay to feed 2,500 people in the neighborhood."
J.R. Smith says he regrets his old spending habits, per @IAMATHLETEpod.
"I could have fed my whole community 10 times over with the money I was [paying in fines] for being late on the bus. We'd rather go throw $60K in the strip club than go feed 2,500 people in the hood." pic.twitter.com/SPSPqN5pmh
