As previously announced, activists of the "Last Generation" tried to disrupt the Berlin Marathon. The police were able to prevent this.
Shortly before the start of the Berlin Marathon, activists of the "Last Generation" tried to disrupt it. The action was announced in advance and was prevented by local security forces. Nevertheless, the attempted protest left its mark.
Action of the "Last Generation" announced at the Berlin Marathon
In recent days, members of the "Last Generation" have been protesting more and more in Berlin. The highlight of the actions so far was the spraying of the Brandenburg Gate with orange paint last weekend. Another sign should then be set at the Berlin Marathon, according to an announcement by the association during the week.
The climate activists' announcement was met with harsh criticism. Also because this time it was not cars that were to be blocked, but runners who had been working towards the competition all year. Among the critics was Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), who condemned the announcement and called for the protest to be abandoned.
Protest action prevented shortly before the start of the marathon
Seconds before the starting signal for the runners, the "Last Generation" wanted to implement their announcement. But as can be seen on videos, the protest attempt was thwarted by police and security forces who intervened quickly.
The climate activists also shared the attempted action via their own social media accounts. On X, formerly Twitter, they posted a video, with a kind of apology: "By the way: We are just as sorry to interrupt the everyday life of a craftsman as we are to interrupt the long-awaited competition of a runner."

A sticking action could be prevented, but for a short time the activists were on the route and held up posters. In addition, after the successful clearance, paint remained on the asphalt, which will also be visible there at least until the next rain. (sch)
