Last Sunday, when he was two seconds ahead of his teammate Esteban Ocon a few laps from the finish, Pierre Gasly was ordered to let him pass for the win of the... 9th place. A decision that was offended the finally 10th of the Japanese event: "I do not understand the decision to change the places, knowing that it had never been discussed before the race. I had done better qualifying, I was in front and I had more pace at the end with fresher tyres. I don't really understand the need to do that. But we are 9th and 10th and that's three more points for the team. The rest will be discussed internally."

An opinion to which Ocon responded firmly to Auto Hebdo: "I have been in this team for four years and the rule has always been the same. If you swap positions during the race, which I did with Pierre – I gave him my position – if you can't get the car in front, then you have to return the position before the chequered flag." Ocon added, referring to the recent past: "It was the same with Daniel Ricciardo and it was the same with Fernando Alonso. We do that, if it's me, if it's him, if it's the other way around, I'll do the same thing. Of course, I always prefer to fight on the track, it's a bit old school but I understand the team's point of view, which is to try to score as many points as possible."
