Gnabry diagnosis there: Bayern star absent "several weeks" after injury

FC Bayern are richer by one absence: In the DFB Cup match in Münster, Serge Gnabry had to be replaced early on – and was seriously injured.

Münster – FC Bayern took an early 1-0 lead in the DFB-Pokal first-round match at Preußen Münster. At the same time, however, Serge Gnabry was the next injured player.

In the 4th minute, Leon Goretzka played Gnabry high in the Münster penalty area. Gnabry is a tad faster on the ball than Johannes Schenk and crashes into the home goalkeeper in that scene. Gnabry apparently fell on his left arm.

The collision had consequences for the Bavarian winger, who initially held his injured arm for a long time and continued to play for a few minutes, but then had to be replaced in the eleventh minute. The young Frans Krätzig came into the game for Gnabry.

Broken forearm: Serge Gnabry will miss FC Bayern for "several weeks"

Sky commentator Wolff Fuss immediately had a bad suspicion: "And the forearm is now being examined very closely to see if something may have been broken." What was clear immediately after the game was that the examinations during the match provided a bitter diagnosis.

"He broke his forearm, we were already on the X-ray," Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel delivered the bad news on the Sky microphone after the end of the game. "We will miss him for several weeks. My latest status is that he will be operated on – tomorrow in Munich. He's an important player, great character. It's bitter now."

Because of Serge Gnabry: FC Bayern's hospital is growing

Gnabry has not had the strong sporting impact that position colleague Leroy Sané brings to the table so far this season. There was even speculation about a possible departure. However, Gnabry is a seeded German international. To be able to bring such quality into play from the bench if necessary is outstanding - and will severely inhibit Tuchel in the coming weeks.

As a result of the Gnabry injury, the Munich hospital continues to grow. Minjae Kim and Dayot Upamecano have already been ruled out at short notice for the cup match in Münster. Since Matthijs de Ligt and Tarek Buchmann also had to pass, it was damn tight in central defence.

Gnabry will therefore not only miss the Bundesliga top game this Saturday (18:30 CET) at RB Leipzig, but also the away game in the Champions League against FC Copenhagen (3 October) and probably the two friendly matches with the German national team against the USA (14 October) and Mexico (18 October).
