Summary of Maccabi Tel Aviv's 0-5 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the derby/Sport1
On October 24, 2008, 21-year-old Eran Zehavi entered the first Tel Aviv derby of his life. The young midfielder only came on as a substitute, but his Hapoel Tel Aviv beat its arch-rivals 0-2 - and there the seeds were planted for a phenomenon that will stand out almost 15 years later: Eran Zahavi often scores in derbies, but he wins even more.
Zahavi has taken part in 22 derbies so far. He won 14 of them, drew 7 times and lost only once. Almost 80 (!) success rate.
Last night (Tuesday), when he scored Maccabi Tel Aviv's fourth at the start of the second half on the way to another crushing 0-5 victory over Hapoel, Zahavi became the record scorer in the Tel Aviv derby, overtaking the legendary Shia Glazer. He has 10 goals for Maccabi Tel Aviv, two more for Hapoel. But the truth is that we didn't need this statistical corroboration to notice the enormous impact it has on the balance of power in the city.
Zahavi was there when hegemony was still on the red side of the city. As a Hapoel Tel Aviv player, he recorded 5 wins against Maccabi Tel Aviv, and drew four times. He never lost.
Dominance of years. Zahavi / Ariel Shalom
His move to Maccabi Tel Aviv was a watershed moment in the balance of power in the derby. He scored in his first derby in yellow, which ended in a memorable 0-4. Since then, the Yellows have been in the midst of an unimaginable 3,441-day unbeaten streak for the Reds, which continued even when he moved abroad and went on to spells in China and the Netherlands. Some will say that the glorious victories over Hapoel Tel Aviv, which Zahavi signed in his first term in yellow and blue, paved the way for Maccabi to continue the streak even in his absence.
As a Maccabi Tel Aviv player, Zahavi won nine derbies. Last night he experienced a top five with a wonderful goal and assist. His resume also has other one-sided derbies that ended with fours and threes in the Reds' net. And if during his time at Hapoel Tel Aviv hegemony was on his side, during his time at Maccabi Tel Aviv it was doubly true. Maccabi Tel Aviv's goal ratio in the derbies in which he participated is 27 goals compared to 8 compulsory goals. The success rate is close to 80.
"The City of Tel Aviv," Maccabi Tel Aviv's fan song, boasts that "in this city there is only one, and there is no room for others." As of 2023, that's a pretty correct assertion, but from the perspective of the current millennium, it's more accurate to say that this city has only one. Eran Zehavi.
