Ajax were leading 3-2 when ex-Leipzig player Brian Brobbey inadvertently hit Etienne Vaessen in the head. The goalkeeper of the home team then remained motionless on the ground. The medical attendants who rushed to the scene were able to resuscitate Vaessen.

RKC Waalwijk gives all-clear for Etienne Vaessen

"It is important for Etienne at the moment that he can recover in peace in the coming hours and days," RKC Waalwijk said in a statement after the game. "We would like to ask everyone to give him and his family the time and space to do so." Waalwijk hopes to "see him again soon."

It was bad and anxious moments that took place on Saturday night at Mandemakers Stadium. Players from both teams cried and prayed for Vaessen. When the 28-year-old was taken off the field on a stretcher, he was responsive and conscious again. The referee in charge then stopped the game in the 84th minute. It remains to be seen what will happen next.
