When football becomes a minor matter: At the Eredivisie match between Waalwijk and Ajax Amsterdam, goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen had to be resuscitated.
Waalwijk – After the serious riots at the match between Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam, which even resulted in a cancellation, the Dutch football record champions are once again in the headlines.

Waalwijk keeper motionless on the ground after collision
Terrible scenes had been offered to the spectators on Saturday evening in the stadium and on the TV sets. The match between RKC Waalwijk and Ajax has also been abandoned after two players collided.
Ajax were leading 3-2 when ex-Leipzig player Brian Brobbey inadvertently hit Etienne Vaessen in the head. The goalkeeper of the home team then remained motionless on the ground. The medical attendants who rushed to the scene were able to resuscitate Vaessen.

"It is important for Etienne at the moment that he can recover in peace in the coming hours and days," RKC Waalwijk said in a statement after the game. "We would like to ask everyone to give him and his family the time and space to do so." Waalwijk hopes to "see him again soon."
It was bad and anxious moments that took place on Saturday night at Mandemakers Stadium. Players from both teams cried and prayed for Vaessen. When the 28-year-old was taken off the field on a stretcher, he was responsive and conscious again. The referee in charge then stopped the game in the 84th minute. It remains to be seen what will happen next.

The case was reminiscent of Christian Eriksen. Like Vaessen, the Dane was also shielded with blankets and tarpaulins and resuscitated on the pitch. Eriksen collapsed at the European Football Championship in June 2021 due to a heart attack and has been pursuing his vocation with a pacemaker ever since. (aoe)
