Super Clasico Recap: Boca Juniors vs River Plate 2:0/Sport1

River Plate ended a run of seven away games without a win on Sunday in the sweetest way possible - 0-2 at Boca Juniors' Bombonera, in the 260th Super Clasico in history. The hosts came into the encounter in the Argentine League Cup with their heads in the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores (after 0:0 in the first game against Palmeiras and before the match in Brazil - between Thursday and Friday, 3:30, Sport2), appeared in a secondary lineup and, although superior in the second half, surrendered to their arch-rivals who had been waiting for victory in Bombonera for five years.

River started better and paid off with an accidental goal in the 41st minute when Ansu Pérez's kick was deflected in by Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon. The talented Valentin Barco gave Boca momentum and Edinson Cavani equalised in the 73rd minute, but his goal was disallowed for offside and deep into extra time Ansu Dias sealed the victory.

As expected, the game was hot and windy, both on and off the field. After one of River's goals, as the winning players celebrated on the pitch, objects, glasses and sticks were thrown at the players, which did not stop them from celebrating. Also, a harsh video was posted from the Boca stands, when fans of the host allegedly identified an "infiltrator" of the Popular stand, a River fan, who was not wearing a River shirt, but did have a tattoo on his hand that he did not bother to hide. He was beaten by Boca fans, severely punched and spit on, and evacuated from the pitch on a stretcher. He is reportedly hospitalized in serious condition.

On the flip side, this result should calm River fans down a bit after the elimination from the Libertadores and take the pressure off coach Martin Demichelis, who despite the championship has been in tension with several senior players on the roster since his off-the-record conversation with reporters was leaked a few weeks ago, in which the coach mentioned some of the names not in his plans for 2024.
