The incident occurred during the men's hammer throw competition on Sunday, which took place at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium. Kuwaiti Ali Zanqawi tried to launch the hammer, but it hit the net surrounding the throwing circle. The hammer then hit Huang's right leg, which was located on a chair outside the circle. After being carried on a stretcher outside the stadium, Huang was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery. Zenkawai has since visited Huang at the hospital, where he apologized to him.
Zenkawai said he came to Huang's aid as soon as he realized what had happened. "I lifted my head and found that the hammer had jumped off the ground to the referee's leg, so I ran to him quickly and tried to help him, especially since he was in a state of shock and writhing in pain," Zenkawi told AFP. "After I got to him, I discovered a cleft in his pants and saw blood spilling from his leg, and I knew he was suffering from a fracture. I then tied him tightly to stop the bleeding until the ambulance arrived, so I helped them by putting him on the stretcher to transport him to the hospital. Thank God the hammer hit the ground before it hit his leg."
