Bayer Leverkusen is having an outstanding season. Florian Wirtz is partly responsible for this. Toni Kroos sang the praises of the 20-year-old.
Leverkusen/Madrid – Florian Wirtz is playing big this Bundesliga season. The 20-year-old Bayer Leverkusen attacking star has played a key role in the Werkself currently leading the table. With his strong performances, the youngster is also attracting interest from top clubs, including FC Bayern. The Germany international has repeatedly been linked with the German record champions. But with Toni Kroos, of all people, a former Munich player is now campaigning for a move to Real Madrid for the huge talent.
Reinforcements for Real Madrid? Former FCB star Kroos: "I'm thinking of Wirtz"
Speaking to Spanish sports newspaper Marca, Kroos revealed himself to be a fan of the young Leverkusen player. "Which players have the potential to play for Real Madrid? I should have a more global view, but I'm thinking of Florian Wirtz," admitted the 33-year-old German, who has been playing for Real for nine years.
Kroos is impressed by his compatriot's profile and style of play. "I think he could fit," said the Madrilenian – putting Wirtz on a par with world star Jude Bellingham. The names of potential predecessors are even bigger: Zinedine Zidane, Mesut Özil and Kaká have already acted as creative control centres in Real's midfield.

FCB could come away empty-handed: Will ex-Bayern star Kroos lure Wirtz to Real Madrid?
Like Wirtz, Kroos himself once played for the Werkself. From January 2009 to June 2010, he played for Bayer 04 on loan from FC Bayern, before asserting himself in midfield and celebrating numerous successes – although one detail always got on his nerves at Bayern.
In 2014, he moved to Madrid for a transfer fee of 25 million euros, where he has since won the Champions League four times. Kroos found his way from Leverkusen to Madrid via Munich. Now he could also make a move to the Spanish capital palatable to Wirtz – his former employer, Bayern, would then come away empty-handed. The competition for the young whirlwind is already fierce.

Numerous top clubs are competing with Bayern in the race for Leverkusen's Wirtz
Not only Real, but also Manchester City and Chelsea FC are said to be interested in the 20-year-old Leverkusen gem. Most recently, Liverpool FC also appeared on the scene.
Jürgen Klopp's team is apparently offering an astronomical sum for the youngster, who is still under contract at the Rhine until 2027. Bayern would therefore have to dig deep into their pockets to sign the German international. However, it will take some time before a transfer could take place anyway. Recently, Wirtz himself took the wind out of the sails of the rumours of a departure from Leverkusen. (wuc)
