Thomas Müller and FC Bayern – this love affair has lasted for over 23 years. A sequel is uncertain. Müller has apparently made a decision for himself.

Munich – Eight player contracts expire at FC Bayern until the summer of 2025. The new sporting director Christoph Freund has long since taken up his work. Key players such as Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané and Alphonso Davies are expected to extend their contracts in the near future. Even more acute, however, is the personnel of Thomas Müller. The working paper with the identification figure of the club will end in just a few months, on 30.06.2024.

FC Bayern are apparently planning contract talks with Thomas Müller

Thomas Müller stands for FC Bayern like no other. The Bavarian native has been playing for FC Bayern Munich for over 23 years – first in the youth ranks and then in the first team. The 34-year-old embodies Mia san Mia and leads the way as a leader – FCB fans can hardly imagine their club without Müller.

The bosses apparently see it similarly and, according to Sport Bild, are planning initial talks with the club legend about a contract extension in the coming weeks. Müller has given the club management the signal that he does not want to end his career before 2025.

Bayern icon Müller makes decision to end his career

"I definitely want to continue playing for a year beyond 2024. At least that's my plan," Müller explained. "I'm still enjoying being on the pitch – I hope you can see that."

Whether that will be the case at FC Bayern or elsewhere remains to be seen. What is certain is that Müller does not want to end his career at the end of the season. A move within the Bundesliga is also not out of the question for Müller. However, the world champion wants to continue playing in the Champions League.

Tuchel continues Nagelsmann's development: Müller lost regular place at FC Bayern to Musiala

Müller has now lost his regular place at FC Bayern, with 14 minutes of action and two goals and five assists in 483 competitive games. In the Champions League, the attacking star was only substituted in three games. Due to the injury to Jamal Musiala, who recently resumed training, Müller was able to play more often. Of course, Müller cannot be satisfied with this.

"It's clear that it annoys me when I'm not on the pitch," Müller openly admits. However, the 34-year-old is aware: "We currently have almost an oversupply of quality players in our attack. Everyone has to swallow sometimes." Coach Thomas Tuchel is gradually distributing the responsibility to other shoulders. This development already began under Tuchel's predecessor, when a transfer drama repeated itself and Nagelsmann broke a Müller promise.

Müller dreams of Champions League final in Munich – bench place under national coach Nagelsmann

Nevertheless, nothing should stand in the way of a cooperation between FC Bayern and Thomas Müller. However, the extension is by no means likely to be a sure-fire success, after all, Müller is one of the top earners with an annual salary of around 20 million euros. On 31 May 2025, the homegrown player could end his great career in the Champions League final in Munich – should FCB make it to the "final at home" once again.

Until then, however, there is still a lot of water flowing down the Isar, and Müller will first be challenged with the German national team. National coach Nagelsmann, who still has question marks over his line-up against Austria, left Müller on the bench for 2 minutes last Saturday in the 3-90 defeat against Turkey in Berlin's cold Olympic Stadium.
