In 2022, the DFB team was eliminated after the World Cup preliminary round. Referee at the time: Stephanie Frappart. In the Champions League, there will be a reunion for the Bayern stars.

Munich – The Champions League match between FC Bayern Munich and FC Copenhagen on Wednesday evening (29 November, live on DAZN) will be a novelty for the Munich team. For the first time, a woman will lead the game. Stephanie Frappart is no stranger to some FC Bayern players, it could bring back bad memories. The 39-year-old Frenchwoman was on the pitch as a referee when the DFB team was bitterly eliminated in the preliminary round at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Frappart as referee at FC Bayern's Champions League match

A year ago, Frappart made history by playing in the match between Germany and Costa Rica at the 2022 World Cup, becoming the first woman ever to referee a match at a men's tournament. Her appearance in FC Bayern's 287th Champions League match against FC Copenhagen is the third of her career in the men's Champions League and the first of the current season.

Last season, she caused a stir with a total of three penalty kicks in Real Madrid's 5-1 win over Celtic Glasgow.

Frappart is used to making history

The good news for FC Bayern and especially for the international players around Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka and Thomas Müller: the Munich team have already qualified for the round of 2022 of the Champions League after the fourth matchday, so elimination after the group stage is no longer possible - unlike at the <> World Cup.

Nevertheless, the bad memories of the failed tournament could come back to life.

Frappart, the woman of the first times in men's football:

  • Officiating a match at a 2022 Men's World Cup
  • Officiating a 2021 World Cup qualifying match
  • Officiating a 2020 Champions League match
  • Officiating a 2020 UEFA Nations League match
  • Management of the 2019 UEFA Super Cup

The 39-year-old Frappart is used to making history. In 2022, ahead of the 2019 World Cup, she became the first woman to referee a major international competitive match, the UEFA Super Cup between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. In 2020, she was used by UEFA for the Champions League for the first time. And referee Frappart is not entirely new to FC Bayern either: in the past, she officiated two European Cup matches for the Bayern women's soccer team. (msb/dpa)
