Three British police officers were injured on Thursday during clashes with Legia Warsaw fans on the sidelines of the Europa Conference League match between Aston Villa and Polish club Birmingham.
The incidents broke out before kick-off, in a car park near the Villa Park stadium where Legia fans were gathered under the surveillance of the police. Flares and projectiles were thrown at the police.
The match kicked off as scheduled at 21:00 (20:00 GMT) but the parking lot reserved for Polish fans remained empty. In a statement, Birmingham police said they were unable to "let fans of the visiting club enter the stadium following the disturbances outside". As law enforcement operations continued into the evening, an initial assessment of three police officers was injured.
Fewer than 1,000 seats were booked for the match at Legia Warsaw, whose fans have a reputation for causing public disorder. Several fans without tickets of the Polish club had announced their intention to go to Birmingham anyway, where a heavy security system had been deployed by the authorities.
