Thomas Tuchel can also do things differently. During a visit to the ISPO sports trade fair, the Bayern coach is more personal than ever. He also talks about criticism of him.

Munich – Thomas Tuchel seems to have finally arrived at FC Bayern. After a difficult first few months, his team is increasingly implementing the 50-year-old's ideas on the pitch. And off the pitch, too, it seems as if Tuchel has now internalised the mechanisms around Säbener Straße.

Tuchel speaks publicly about divorce

Tuchel was visibly pleased with the public backing of the Bayern bosses after the exchange of blows with Lothar Matthäus and Didi Hamann. In Munich, Tuchel is also closer to his Swabian homeland than ever before in his professional coaching career.

Not to be underestimated, considering that the 50-year-old lives alone in the Bavarian capital. In 2022, Tuchel and his wife Sissi divorced after 13 years of marriage. She had previously accompanied him everywhere with the children. At the Munich sports trade fair ISPO, Tuchel, who usually keeps his private life out of the public eye, spoke about the divorce.

Tuchel got to know his ex-wife during his time at Augsburg

"We always traveled with the whole family. Now, unfortunately, my personal family situation has changed a bit due to my divorce. Until then, it was normal and very nice that we were always on the road as a family, which was not always so easy for my wife and daughters. They had to leave their friends, their schools, and start all over again. There are always two sides," Tuchel said. The Bayern coach has two daughters with Sissi: Emma-Josefine and Kim.

His ex-wife accompanied the now 50-year-old from the beginning. Even back in the days when Tuchel was still youth coach of FC Augsburg, the two were a couple. Last year, the divorce followed. It's a good thing that Tuchel's hometown of Krumbach is only a good 100 kilometres away from Munich.

Tuchel visits parents' house more often and tries to block out criticism

In the recent past, the Bayern coach has increasingly used his proximity to his parents' house to visit his homeland. "When I open the door to the house where my parents still live, I'm just the son coming home, and that's very nice. I'm discovering all of this now with my new private situation. I can switch off very well there, be myself when I close the door," Tuchel explained.

During his appearance at the sports fair, Tuchel also admitted that criticism does affect him - and also his closest environment. "Of course I hear things, people send me comments or headlines via WhatsApp, are angry, my parents are worried. They ask me about it and it does something to me right away. There's a level where it's not healthy anymore and it's affecting my mental health and I don't want that. But that's easier said than done," Tuchel said openly.

That's why the Bayern coach tries to stay away from the internet and read as little about himself as possible. At the moment, however, Tuchel is likely to enjoy what is being written anyway. (kk
