FC Bayern's match against Union Berlin had to be cancelled due to the masses of snow. Now the Allianz Arena has been freed from this – in an unusual way.

Munich – Probably quite a few fans must have been sad on Saturday when FC Bayern's match against Union Berlin had to be cancelled in the morning.

However, it would not have been justifiable to hold the game under these circumstances. More than 40 centimetres of fresh snow fell from the sky around the Allianz Arena. It would not have been possible to guarantee safety on arrival for fans, players and all those involved.

Allianz Arena is cleared of ice and snow: helicopter flies over the stadium

"We very much regret that we have to cancel the game, but the safety of our fans and Union Berlin supporters is our absolute priority," CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen was quoted as saying in the official statement. As a result, the Bayern stars had a free Saturday, which they knew how to use.

It is not yet clear when the match between the record champions and Union Berlin will be rescheduled. However, the arena was cleared of the dangerous masses of snow on Sunday - and in a quite impressive way. A helicopter circled over the stadium, blowing the snow and ice off the roof. The "living room of the record champions" will be available to visitors again from Monday.

Will the match therefore be able to be made up for this week? Possibly, but rather unlikely. The Bavarians have scheduled a public training session at Säbener Straße for Tuesday. Actually, not a sign that a game will be played the day after.

My Area

Although Tuesday (5th) or Wednesday (6th) would be a good catch-up date, the DFB and DFL apparently do not want the Bayern game to "compete" with the cup fixtures. Thursday (7th) is out of the question, as Union already have to play Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday (9th, 15:30 CEST).

FC Bayern vs Union Berlin: Make-up date not yet set

Therefore, the game is likely to take place in the new year. There, the Bavarians are apparently taking a different approach when it comes to winter training camps. Coach Thomas Tuchel surprisingly announced "a few days in the sun".

However, it cannot be ruled out that they will now fall flat because the catch-up game against Union is scheduled there ... (smk)
