Last summer started well for 32-year-old Achille Polonara, as he was part of Italy's eighth-place World Cup team, where he averaged 5.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in just under 20 minutes on the court. Later, he was mentioned as a candidate for quite a few teams in the Euroleague, including Maccabi Tel Aviv, and in the end chose Virtus Bologna. But about a few months ago, the Italian forward's summer took a turn, when he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his testicles and had to stop basketball and start undergoing treatments.
On Sunday, after undergoing chemotherapy last month that caused his hair to fall out, he returned. Luca Banchi gave him 8 minutes on the court, contributing five points and helping his team beat Torrenta 70-99 in the Italian league.
The coach spoke after the game about Polonara's return to the field: "It was a convincing week of training in which Achille brought all his desire, energy and optimism. After what happened it was nice to see him back on the court and also came his 5 points that the team wanted to celebrate in the right way. He experienced a moment of great stress and that he dealt with with maturity and seriousness, I hope the affection he felt in the city, from the fans and from the entire Italian basketball community, because everywhere we were there was always a thought for him, and I hope it could have been another boost to his recovery."
