European Championship draw: Germany vs. Scotland, Portugal vs. Turkey

18:41 p.m.: Pot 3 is drawn: Scotland is Germany's second opponent. It could have been worse. The opening match has therefore also been confirmed: Germany will meet the Scots in Munich on 14 June. That could get loud.

18:37 p.m.: Albania will be drawn into the Spain group, Denmark will have to face England. Germany also escapes a duel with "fear opponent" Austria: The kickers from the Alpine republic play against France. Other pairings: Romania vs. Belgium and Portugal vs. Turkey.

18:36 p.m.: Now pot 2: Hungary is Germany's first opponent at Euro 2024.

18.35 p.m.: The teams from Pot 2 are assigned. Spain will play in Group B, England in Group C, France in Group D, Belgium in Group E and Portugal in Group F.

18:31 p.m.: It's time to get down to business: The mascot Albärt hands over the first lot – Germany, of course. The teams from pot one are now presented and assigned to the groups.

18:28 p.m.: The drawn EM groups will be visualised in an unusual way – with containers in the Port of Hamburg. For each lot, a container of the respective country is moved.

18.24pm: Now UEFA's "Master of Ceremonies" comes into play: Giorgio Marchetti. The Italian is probably best known to football fans through the Champions League draws. He explains the procedure in detail once again.

18:19 p.m.: The official Euro 2024 song will be presented for the first time: performers are the Italian EDM group Meduza, the US pop band OneRepublic and the American singer Kim Petras. The name of the song has not yet been revealed.

18:13 p.m.: Presenter Esther Sedlaczek will open with a speech, accompanied by UEFA's Pedro Pinto. The two announce a real football legend as their first guest: Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian enters the stage. He will act as a lottery fairy – but not the only one. Nine other deserving players keep him company. Angelos Charisteas, Brian Laudrup, Sami Khedira and David Silva, among others, take the stage.

18:05 p.m.: The event begins with music. Star violinist David Garrett gets started, accompanied by the National Youth Orchestra. The Munich tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings.

Update, 18:04 p.m.: In the meantime, numerous prominent guests have arrived. Many national coaches and stars with a European Championship past – including Luis Figo – gather in the Elbphilharmonie.

Update, 18:01 p.m.: The Euro 2024 group draw ceremony will start at any moment. The tension is rising. Who will the DFB team be up against?

Update, 17:35 p.m.: There is only half an hour left to wait – then the European Championship draw will begin. Who will the beleaguered German national team face in the group? It is already clear that another exit in the preliminary round would be another disaster, no matter who Nagelsmann's team has to face.

So far, Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose, Wesley Sneijder and Gianluigi Buffon have confirmed their participation. The evening will be hosted by Esther Sedlaczek and Pedro Pinto.

Nagelsmann arrives: European Championship draw with national coach

Update, 17:01 p.m.: About an hour before the start of the European Championship draw, the national coach has arrived: As the DFB confirmed to the German Press Agency (dpa), Julian Nagelsmann has arrived in Hamburg on time. The 36-year-old spontaneously got into his car and took a car ride of several hours when he was unable to take off due to the snow chaos at Munich Airport.

Update, 16:29 p.m.: While the national coach fights his way through the wintry streets of the Federal Republic of Germany, football Germany is looking forward to the draw for the European Championship group stage. The last time there was a European Championship in Germany was in 1988. One year before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the West German team made it to the semi-finals, but then had to admit defeat to the Dutch.

In the group stage, the German team was drawn in a difficult group consisting of Italy, Spain and Denmark. Uli Stielike's eight-year-old son drew the lots – a scenario that is hard to imagine today.

Nagelsmann on his way to the European Championship draw by car

Update, 14:13 p.m.: For national coach Julian Nagelsmann, the journey to the draw is different than expected. The flight from Munich to Hamburg was cancelled in the morning. That's why the 36-year-old now travels the 800 kilometres by car. Despite the long travel time, Nagelsmann should probably be on site in Hamburg on time for the start of the draw at 18 p.m., the DFB said at the request of the German Press Agency.

Update, 13:01 p.m.: In five hours, the group draw for the Euro 2024 in Germany will begin. The countdown is on, the tension is rising. The ambience is also right, as you can see on the DFB post on X (formerly Twitter). So everything should fit, right?

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz looks "with great curiosity" at the European Championship draw

Update, 11:58 a.m.: When the groups are drawn in the evening, Chancellor Olaf Scholz will also be looking forward to Hamburg. "It is with great curiosity that we are all looking to Hamburg today, where the first tournament matches will be drawn in the Elbphilharmonie. I am curious to see which teams will meet in the group stage and who our national team will face," the Federal Chancellor was quoted as saying in a press release. The home European Championship should become "a home game for fans from all over Europe", the 65-year-old continued.

Update, 11:08 a.m.: Will the European Championship draw take place without the coach of the German national team? Julian Nagelsmann is stranded at Munich Airport due to the weather situation, but as the DFB announced, he should arrive at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie in time for the draw of the balls.

Group draw for home European Championship: Völler has preferred opponent

First reported on 2 December, 7.12 a.m.: Hamburg – Rudi Völler has already looked over at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie with a desire for revenge. The DFB sporting director has a hope for the European Championship draw (all information on the procedure, groups and draw pots) on Saturday in the magnificent Great Hall.

"I'd like to see Turkey or Austria in the group. We'll see the rest," said Völler at an event at the Ginn Hotel, setting the course for a successful home tournament: "We still have the opportunity to find a good mix of playing elegance, will and fighting spirit with our top coach Julian Nagelsmann and our players."

Draw of the European Championship groups: "Group of Death" possible for Germany

But against which teams will the hosts be challenged? In the draw (18:00 CEST/TV info can be found here), a "group of death" threatens with defending champion Italy, arch-rival Netherlands and DFB terror Austria. In the preliminary round matches of Group A in Munich (14 June), Stuttgart (19th) and Frankfurt (23rd), there could also be supposedly easier tasks against Albania, Slovenia and a qualifier.

"It's going to be exciting because it's out of your hands," said Nagelsmann, promising that they will "prepare meticulously" regardless of their opponents. In the draw, however, the three-time European champions are only seeded in pot 1 due to their role as hosts and thus avoid the favourites France, Spain or England for the time being. In total, the 24 teams will be divided into six groups.

Euro 2024 group draw: Who will draw the lots? Sedlaczek moderates

Who will draw the lots at the one-hour event is still a secret. All that is known so far is that ARD presenter Esther Sedlaczek and Portuguese UEFA presenter Pedro Pinto will host the ceremony. According to UEFA, "eleven former European champions will also be on stage".

Before that, it will be musical in keeping with the venue. The Munich tenor Jonas Kaufmann and star violinist David Garrett will get the 2100 guests in the mood for the highlight of the evening. As a result of the draw, the second sales phase for the European Championship tickets will start – all information can be found here.
