TV pundit Didi Hamann sharply criticises the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann and thinks a dismissal before the home European Championship is possible.
Frankfurt – The German national football team is still in crisis after the change of coach from Hansi Flick to Julian Nagelsmann. Euphoria among fans ahead of Euro 2024? Not at all! If the performances of the DFB selection do not improve significantly in the friendlies in France and against the Netherlands in March, TV pundit Didi Hamann sees a replacement for Nagelsmann.
TV pundit Hamann criticises Nagelsmann's approach
"If they go wrong, then Julian Nagelsmann won't be a coach at the European Championship. That's not possible, we can't afford that. No matter what he does, nothing works. He knows just as much now, if not less, than he did before the four games," Hamann said on the show "Sky90 - the football debate."
For Hamann, the attacking orientation of the German national team under Nagelsmann is a big mistake. In the 0-2 defeat against Austria in Vienna, there were only three defensive players on the field – Jonathan Tah, Mats Hummels and Antonio Rüdiger – incomprehensible to Hamann. "How are you going to bring any stability or control to your game? You don't need to be a nuclear physicist," he said, criticising national coach Nagelsmann for this decision.

Didi Hamann lacks a defensively strong midfielder in the starting eleven, who can also simply intervene. For him, Angelo Stiller (VfB Stuttgart), Grischa Prömel (TSG Hoffenheim) and Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen) would be possible options for the place in front of the defence. "You can't build a team around your offense," continued Hamann, who is not happy with Nagelsmann's attacking orientation
Nagelsmann announces changes to the basic structure of the DFB selection
Nagelsmann himself will not deviate from his direction of travel and yet he announced changes for 2024. "There is no radical cure now that we leave ten players at home and invite ten new ones, but it will change something in the structure, because we also have a changed national team in terms of self-image, in the way we perform," he confirmed during the European Championship draw.

But no luck for Germany? Supposedly easy European Championship draw has a downside
Fancy a voyage of discovery?
Nagelsmann also has high hopes for Manuel Neuer, with whom the defence could regain stability. "If he stays healthy and plays like he is now, he'll be there," the national coach said. (smr)
