After two complicated seasons in Metz that certainly made him miss the World Cup with Morocco, Sofiane Alakouch is reborn with Par

In three months at Paris FC, Sofiane Alakouch (25 years old) has already played more games (11) than in two seasons with Metz (9). Launched in Ligue 2 at the age of 17 with Nîmes, the club of his hometown, the right-back had a linear and promising start to his career: U19 and U21 international, three full seasons in Ligue 1 (64 games). But he became disillusioned after Nîmes' descent into Ligue 2 and his signing for Metz in 2021.

"It went very badly. The coach and management didn't count on me," he said. It was a sporty choice. That is the only explanation I was given. I didn't necessarily get all the answers. In terms of behaviour, I remained serious. I have nothing to reproach myself with. But it was very hard at times. »

While his four-month loan in Switzerland to Lausanne in 2022 allowed him to play again for a while, he had a very complicated last season at Metz. "I'm just a human and at times, mentally, it wasn't like that anymore. I didn't always hold out. You try to stay concerned but you get into a routine. You train every day knowing you won't be playing on the weekends. We went up to Ligue 1, I was happy for the squad but I was just waiting for the season to end. »

His sidelining in Metz also certainly deprived him of a place in Morocco's list for the World Cup in Qatar. After his selections in the France youth team, he had indeed chosen to join the Atlas Lions. On 16 November 2021, he made his first start in place of Achraf Hakimi against Guinea (3-0). Alakouch, 4 caps, was then called up for the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon and then for the final World Cup qualifying matches.

"I thought, I could have been there with them at the World Cup... »

"I was in the squad, so the next logical step was the World Cup... But I was playing more with my club. So, it was normal that I wasn't called anymore. So I experienced the World Cup as a fan with my family to follow our incredible journey to the semi-finals. But I still had a bitter taste. I thought, I could have been there with them... It stuck in my throat. It hurts and it has left its mark. Morally, it made my second half of the season even more complicated. »

In a stalemate at Metz where he is under contract until 2025, Sofiane Alakouch was loaned to Paris FC at the end of August. His arrival had sparked some scepticism among supporters. "It's normal that there were questions about me. People see a name coming in that hasn't played for a year, and they're bound to wonder what he's worth, if he's still at the level... »

After three months, the first assessment is rather positive. The attacking full-back, who scored a goal and provided an assist, is gradually regaining her sensations. "I arrived with a vengeful spirit. I already wanted to get back to the pleasure and the level that I had. Even though I'm still not 100% compared to before, I've got my bearings, playing time and rhythm. I think I was good and brought my experience and qualities. It was also important to me to remind everyone who Sofiane Alakouch is... »

At Paris FC, he was reunited with Stéphane Gilli, who was Vahid Halilhodžić's assistant in Morocco. "I wanted to thank the coach and the club for bringing me to Paris FC. The coach, he's from my region, I have him in the Morocco national team, I've always had a good relationship with him. »

"I've known Sofiane for a long time," says Stéphane Gilli. We already had Hakimi and Mazraoui and we were looking for a versatile defender like him. He had a promising start to his career but was hampered by injuries. He has a good mentality, he is tactically intelligent and has the technical qualities for our game plan. Even if he's out on loan, he's very committed, he's doing well in the locker room. He even took the risk of playing injured with a foot that didn't fit in the shoe and with a sore knee. I'm very happy with his contribution, he only confirms the good I thought of him and he's in the process of getting back on track. »
