A German golf newcomer called Tiger is making more and more of a name for himself. What many people don't know is that his father has been the far bigger star so far.

Hamburg – When asked about world-class German golfers, two names usually come to mind: on the one hand, Bernhard Langer, who is still active at the age of 66 and won the U.S. Senior Open in 2023. On the other hand, of course, Martin Kaymer (38), two-time major winner. Soon, another player could join this circle: Tiger Christensen (20).

Golf newcomer Tiger Christensen hopes for a great future

In July 2023, the then 19-year-old had made his major debut at the British Open. He missed the cut, so he had to watch the last two rounds as a spectator. But he formulated equally big goals. "I actually see myself and my game pretty safe here at this level at some point," he is quoted as saying by NDR. Even before his premiere, he had declared: "At the end of my career, I want to have won as many majors as possible."

Tiger Christensen comes from Hamburg, Germany, and currently studies and plays at the University of Arizona. At the moment, the German still has amateur status. Does he have what it takes to make it big? "He is one of the best we have in the German junior golfers," enthused professional national coach Ulrich Eckhardt to Die Welt. "Especially since his life was set up for a career as a professional from an early age. He is very supported and encouraged by his parents."

Tiger Christensen: Father Alex Christensen is a music star – He was at the Eurovision Song Contest

In fact, his father is not just anyone, but – as of now – the far bigger star. He is Alex Christensen (56). In 96, he landed the hit "Das Boot" with his project U1991 – one of the great techno anthems of the nineties, which probably everyone still knows today.

As a musician, writer and producer, Alex Christensen has been in the thick of the business ever since. The Hamburger, who grew up in the district of Wilhelmsburg, provided – partly in collaboration with other makers – hits by Prince Ital Joe feat. Marky Mark, of Right Said Fred, of Bro'Sis, produced the album "Christmas" for Helene Fischer. The list goes on and on.

Also on this list is a less than glorious participation in the Eurovision Song Contest: The song "Miss Kiss Kiss Bang" by Alex Swing's Oscar Sings! ranked 2009th in 20. Many people today are more likely to remember the stage show with Dita von Teese. Another anecdote on the side: It was also Christensen who discovered a young lady named Verona Feldbusch (today: Verona Pooth) in a disco in 1990 and made her the face of the project Chocolate and the song "Ritmo de la Noche".

The mom also has a past as a music star, albeit a much shorter one: Under the name Rollergirl, she had several hits at the turn of the millennium, produced by Alex Christensen, including the Madonna cover "Dear Jessie". Today, she works as a real estate agent, according to Spiegel. Mr. and Mrs. Christensen live in Hamburg's Elbe suburbs, while their son studies in Arizona and works on his skills, even jetting around the world for tournaments.

Golf newcomer Tiger Christensen: name comes from Tiger Woods and Dariusz "Tiger" Michalczewski

As the namesake for Tiger Christensen, everyone will probably assume golf legend Tiger Woods. That's only half true. "So it's fifty-fifty," said the young golfer, who was born in 2003, according to NDR. Another inspiration for the first name: boxer Dariusz "Tiger" Michalczewski, with whom his dad was good friends. "My parents wanted a rather unusual first name. It wasn't easy to get the permit, but now it's in my passport."

Tiger Christensen came to golf through his father. He didn't start doing it until he was 35 and noticed that his son had far more talent than he did. He began to promote it. "I still remember," Alex Christensen recalls in Der Spiegel, "the first time we went to the Hamburg Golf Club in Falkenstein. We stood in front of it and said to ourselves: Let's turn back. That's not for us." In the end, they dared to enter the elite-looking circle. It was the next step towards a golf career that is probably far from over.

Golf newcomer Tiger Christensen doesn't think much of a plan B

Star genes, a star name, plus star ambitions, maybe even a star talent – there are some indications that Tiger Christensen could also break into the top golf ranks at some point. Which is pretty much the only alternative for him. Tiger's clear statement in Der Spiegel: "If you have a plan B, you don't stand a chance against someone who only has a plan A." Bastian Schweinsteiger has long since made the leap to world stardom – and recently had to listen to ridicule for a bicycle photo. (lin)
