We don't understand anything, and neither do the main people concerned! As the first weekend of the Heineken Champions Cup season looms this Friday evening, the new format of the competition continues to be debated. On the programme, 24 clubs, eight of which are French, four groups of six instead of two groups of twelve, with only four matches per club, without two teams from the same country being able to play each other.

A big headache for the organisers, the clubs, the fans... And the players. Facing Cardiff this Saturday at 16 p.m., Toulouse did not go easy against the format, starting with their playmaker Antoine Dupont. "To tell you the truth, we don't understand much about it. It's hard to make sense of this new formula, it's changing all the time. Those who organize it must find their account, "says the captain of the XV of France.

"Why do we only play four games when we're in a group of six?"

The number 9 of Les Bleus and Stade Toulousain does not bother with these complications. "We just know it's a very short format with four games. We have to win as many games and points as possible to try to host in the finals. That's the gist of it. We're focusing on that rather than the format of the competition," said Antoine Dupont.

His teammate Peato Mauvaka didn't understand much either. "I still don't know why we're only playing four games when we're in a pool of six," said the hooker, who added that his manager Ugo Mola "got upset" in training this week about the format.

In this new version of the Heineken Champions Cup, Stade Toulousain will host Cardiff and Bath and travel to Harlequins and Ulster during this group stage. Union Bordeaux-Bègles, the first French club involved, will open hostilities against Connacht this Friday at 21 p.m.

Two-time reigning European champions La Rochelle will wait until Sunday (16.15pm) for their opening match against Irish side Leinster, their victims in the last two finals. Toulon host Exeter on Saturday (14pm) while Bayonne travel to Munster (18.30pm) and Lyon visit Virimi Vakatawa's Bristol (21pm).

The two Ile-de-France clubs will be involved on Sunday with Stade Français away to Sale (14pm) and Racing 92 hosting Harlequins (18.30pm) at the Paris La Défense Arena.
