Mathys Tel wears the unusual shirt number 39 at FC Bayern. But this is a very conscious decision and is considered a reference to a great player.
Munich – When a centre-forward has a free choice of jersey number, it often falls on the number nine. Not so with Bayern talent Mathys Tel. The young Frenchman deliberately opted for the number 39 shirt at FC Bayern, and now he reveals why he chose this high number.

Bayern's Tel already played for Stade Rennes with the number 39
Tel's explanation is twofold. On the one hand, he already wore this number at his boyhood club Stade Rennes. On the other hand, he points to Nicolas Anelka. The compatriot Tels also wore the number 39 on some of his stations. At Manchester City and Chelsea, among others, the European champion went on the hunt for goals in the Premier League at the age of 39. Just like Tel, Anelka was also a centre-forward. "I like Anelka, he was a really good player," "Bayern & Germany" quotes him on platform X.
But Tel could have made a different decision, as he revealed to the French online magazine Carré. When he was signed, he could have opted for the number nine in a conversation with Marco Neppe and Hasan Salihamidzic. This had just become vacant in the summer of 2022 due to the departure of striker Robert Lewandowski.

Tel wants to earn the number nine at FC Bayern first
"I didn't want to take Lewandowski's number nine without having done something at Bayern, without people knowing me. I wanted to earn it. It's a big challenge and a lot of motivation," Tel said, explaining his decision. In the meantime, Tel has twelve goals and three assists after 46 appearances, but he has already played his way into the hearts of the fans.
Harry Kane will also have been pleased with Tel's decision to drop the nine. Bayern's new superstar could now fall back on the nine. Before that, Bayern didn't have a nine for a year. (jo)
