TSV 1860 Munich has parted ways with Maurizio Jacobacci. Frank Schmöller replaces him on an interim basis until the final of the year. But what happens after that?

Munich – Resourceful fans already suspected on Tuesday morning that something could be up at TSV 1860 Munich. The agency reported that Friedhelm Funkel felt like taking on a coaching job again shortly before his 70th birthday. He had "tasted a little blood" again, said the former specialist for particularly severe cases.

Funkel, who had already coached the Lions once before (2013/14) – and who former sporting director Günther Gorenzel put in position as a possible successor to Michael Köllner exactly one year ago. An enquiry, however, revealed that Funkel's longing for adrenaline on the sidelines is probably not so great after all, at least 1860 doesn't seem to appeal to him at the moment. He announced via WhatsApp that he was on vacation – "and is not thinking about doing anything again at the moment".

Bierofka cancels TSV 1860 Munich – Schweinsteiger would (probably) be available

So Sparkle is out. The same goes for Daniel Bierofka, of whom there had recently been signals that he was open to a job again. It is not known whether Marc-Nicolai Pfeifer has a "short list" or a "long list" in his drawer, as Gorenzel, his ex-partner in the management team, did in the spring. What seems certain, however, is that the following name will also appear in an overview of possible candidates: Tobias Schweinsteiger, former coach of VfL Osnabrück, who would bring a lot of what would qualify him for a job at 1860 in the current situation. He comes from the region, would be available – and has a story that everyone at Grünwalder Straße 114 would love to see imitated.

When Schweinsteiger took over in Osnabrück in the late summer of 2022, VfL were supposedly in 12th place in the table - nine points behind second place. With 70 points, of which the Rosenheimer scored 64, the club from the Bremer Brücke was promoted in the end. Without the detour of relegation – and with an attacking football that would look good on the Lions, especially after Catenaccio fan Jacobacci. By the way, the little brother of World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger is also a self-confessed 1860 fan.

Frank Schmöller takes over until the end of the year

The 41-year-old did not want to say to our newspaper whether a responsible person from Giesing had already contacted him - but he did not deny it either. "I don't comment on that subject," he said, "except that 1860 is always an interesting club as a boy from the region. At the moment, however, I'm still busy working through my time in Osnabrück."

A quick shot in the coach question is probably not to be expected either. Pfeifer has done the most thankless job with Jacobacci's dismissal, and with Frank Schmöller he has installed a temporary solution that is conclusive – and which does not need to be changed due to the 15-day rule until the annual finale in Mannheim (20 December). The new coach will then be largely determined by a man who himself will not get a permanent job at 1860 until shortly before Christmas at the earliest: Christian Werner, future sporting director. He has a doctorate in sports science and certainly has his own ideas about who could be good for the lions after the extroverted Michael Köllner and the authoritarian Jacobacci. (Uli Kellner)
