American sports are in turmoil Saturday after the world's biggest baseball star Shui Ohtani chose to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers for no less than $700 million (!) over ten years.

The 29-year-old Japanese pitcher has slowly become one of the best players in the league for the Los Angeles Angels, being named an All-Star the past three years and winning his second MVP award at the end of last season. After that, he became a highly sought-after free agent, eventually deciding to stay in California and sign with the Dodgers. "I will do anything for the team. Until the last day of my career, I will try to improve not only for the Dodgers, but for the entire baseball world," he wrote on Instagram.

It's the biggest contract in sports history – Lionel Messi held that record when he signed a four-year, $674 million contract at Barcelona (2017-2021). However, Ohtani will earn "only" $70 million per season - and there he ranks fourth all-time, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr and Karim Benzema at Al Ittihad ($214 million each) and Messi at Barcelona ($168 million).

There are seven baseball players in the Top 10 – largely due to the length of MLB contracts. By comparison, the biggest contract signed in the NBA is Jaylen Brown's — $303 million over five years.
