This 17th consecutive home win in La Liga allows the Colchoneros (3rd, 34 points) to put pressure on Barça (4th, level on points) ahead of the Catalan derby where Girona (2nd, 38 points) have the opportunity to reclaim first place ahead of Real.

Almeria remain 20th with only 4 points and still no win in the league.

France striker Antoine Griezmann, who received his Player of the Month award for November before the game, came close to opening his account in December in the 6th minute, but his fox goal was disallowed for offside.

A 171st goal in a Rojiblanco shirt that would have brought him a little closer to his current "obsession": becoming the top scorer in the history of Atlético ahead of the legend Luis Aragonés (173).

It was his usual attacking partner Alvaro Morata who opened the scoring after a high ball recovered by the Mâconnais (17', 1-0), the Spanish striker scoring his 8th goal in La Liga this season.

Griezmann was again decisive in the recovery and the penultimate pass for Correa's second goal (22', 2-0).

Almeria got back into the game through Leo Baptistao in the 62nd minute (2-1), rewarding the efforts of the Andalusians since Diego Simeone's men lost momentum after their second goal.

The Argentine coach rotated in the second half ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Lazio (21 p.m.), where top spot in Group E will be at stake, with no bearing on the scoreline.
