Marseille picked up a third win in a row in Ligue 1 at Lorient (4-2), to confirm their return to form. OM are now 6th, 4 behind

Olympique de Marseille have become a spectacular team again. In Lorient, the Phocaeans triumphed (4-2) in a very lively match, on Sunday evening at the end of the 15th matchday of Ligue 1. In-form Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted a brace to give Marseille a fourth win in all competitions, with 13 goals in total. They are now 6th in Ligue 1, four points from 4th place, qualifying for the Champions League play-offs.

Once again freed up offensively by the 3-5-2, the Olympians created a large number of chances, mainly in the first half (17 shots at the break). Chancel Mbemba opened the scoring from the start (3′, 0-1), before setting up Aubameyang for the second goal with a right-footed cross (9′, 0-2). Very inspired against a desperate defence, OM missed several chances to triple the lead, before Leonardo Balerdi managed to do so with a header from a corner (33', 0-3).

7 goals in 4 games for Aubameyang

Aubameyang, played in by Jordan Veretout, rounded off the attacking feast with a left-footed shot from the first half (42', 1-4). Very inspired since the switch to two points, the Gabonese is on a run of seven goals in four games. His sidekick Vitinha didn't have the same success, but proved useful in his deflection game.

OM were right to blaze in the first half, as the second half was totally Lorient. The Merlus, often clumsy but who can't be blamed for lacking desire, believed in a formidable comeback. The first reduction of the score, by Romain Faivre (41′, 1-3) was wiped out by the fourth goal in the aftermath, but the second, by Benjamin Mendy (52′, 2-4) came in the middle of a Morbihan highlight.

Lorient plunge

The former France international, acquitted last summer after several accusations of rape and attempted rape, broke the deadlock against his former club (2013-2016), on the evening of his first start with Lorient. Mendy was helped by a handball by Pau Lopez, who was much more inspired moments later to deny Montassar Talbi, after a ball cleared off his line by Renan Lodi. The dismissal of Jonathan Clauss (80′), a symbol of a very committed game (five yellows for Lorient, three for Marseille), was not enough.

The Merlus started from too far back and paid for their defensive naivety. Now the worst rearguard in the top flight (29 goals conceded), Lorient have won only twice this season and are more than ever in the play-offs, with 12 points. And their only two pursuers in the standings, Clermont and Lyon, each took points on Sunday.
