The champions knew that their run of games against Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa would be challenging, but Pep Guardiola never imagined that he would finish it with just three points and no wins. Following successive slips, the Citizens have dropped to fourth place and have a gap to catch up from the top, and the task will begin with a meeting against the newcomer who in their last game surrendered 4-3 to Arsenal deep into extra time.

Guardiola hopes it will be a little easier against Luton, and he is happy to have Jack Grealish and Rodri back from suspension, all of whose losses this season have come when he was not on the pitch. However, those not included in the squad are Jérémie Duque and big star Erling Haaland, who is not fit and his place in Spitz has been taken by Julián Albers. Luton, on the other hand, fell below the red line following the loss to the Gunners and Everton's victory over Newcastle, so they hope to continue Guardiola's negative streak and climb to safety.

Had it not been for the ten-point deduction penalty, the Toffees would have been ranked tenth on the eve of the match with a point more than Chelsea. Now at Goodison Park they will try to prove to the Blues that they are at least at their level and register a third successive league win for the first time since February and March 2021. Chelsea, on the other hand, are coming off a defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford and will be hoping to register their first points away in a month since a crazy 1-4 against nine Tottenham players. Mauricio Pochettino surprised by making very significant changes to his line-up, notably by deciding to bench defender Thiago Silva and attacking duo Raheem Sterling and Nicholas Jackson, with Armando Broja alongside Mykhailo Mudryk and Cole Palmer.

50th minute: McNeil received a pass in the opening area, fixed his body and kicked flat on the left, Sanchez flattened himself superbly and sent it into the corner.

55th minute: Goal, 0:1 to Everton! McNeil with a great deep ball set up a one-on-one with Calvert-Lewin, Sanchez stopped but the rebound went to Dukureh who fired in.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle (18.30pm, Sport1)

The Spurs, who started the season by storm, recently experienced a plague of injuries that hit them hard and kept them away from the top. The 3-3 draw against Manchester City was the only point the team has picked up in their last five games, and if they stumble again this time, they will see the Magpies pass them in the table. Newcastle won both meetings last season and the Roosters will be keen to avenge a 6-1 away defeat in April, when Newcastle led 0-5 after 21 minutes. The team from the north of England is also missing, and Eddie Howe may improvise with replacement Swedish defender Emil Kraft as a defender.
