Shortly before the Women's World Cup in St. Moritz, Austria's downhill hopeful and World Championship silver medallist Nina Ortlieb apparently suffered a serious injury.

St. Moritz – Last winter she was in the form of her life: Austria's Nina Ortlieb won her first medal at a major event at the World Ski Championships in Méribel in February and shortly afterwards bagged her second World Cup victory in Kvitfjell, Norway. Now the ÖSV athlete is slowed down by a heavy fall shortly before the World Cup race in Switzerland - even a helicopter was used.

Austrian ski star seriously injured taken to hospital by helicopter

The accident is said to have occurred during the warm-up for the women's super-G race in St. Moritz (Switzerland). According to information from the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), the 27-year-old ski racer was flown by helicopter to a hospital with a suspected tibia and fibula fracture. For Ortlieb, this would not be the first serious injury.

On 20 January 2021, the Vorarlberg native crashed so badly during training in Crans-Montana that she tore both the cruciate ligament and the medial ligament, the lateral meniscus and the patellar tendon. It wasn't until last season that the ÖSV ace really took off again and had reached the zenith of her winter sports career. After the heavy fall, there is now apparently a threat of a long forced break.

Last season's strongest Austrian downhill specialist

Ortlieb finished last season in ninth place in the overall downhill standings – two places behind the best German athlete, Kira Weidle. She has already won two individual World Cup races in her career so far. The athlete, who competes for the Ski Club Arlberg, was also able to record some successes in the national area.

The German ski world champion Alexander Schmid was also affected by a serious injury. The Oberstdorf native suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in March, fought his way back and is now on the verge of his comeback in the World Cup. (likr/dpa)
