The end of the European Championships was on a high note for Maxime Grousset. The New Caledonian, ideally placed in the water line number 4 in the 100m freestyle final, perfectly assumed his status as favourite and won in 45.46. The Frenchman was a few hundredths behind after the last corner but, thanks to a splendid last length, he caught the Italian Alessandro Miressi, who failed to finish in second place. David Popovici completed the podium.

This is the second European title for the swimmer, who won the mixed 4x100 long course in 2022. On Sunday, he ran a near-perfect race, setting the fastest time of the year over the distance. Winner of the 100m butterfly title at the World Championships in Fukuoka last July, he is wrapping up a magnificent 2023.

Several other Frenchmen shone on Sunday. Anastasiia Kirpichnikova and Mewen Tomac came close to two exceptional hat-tricks. Already twice crowned this week, the two Habs won two more medals.

The first named, of Russian origin and recently naturalized French, failed by only six hundredths of a second against the Italian Simona Quadarella. Philippe Lucas' pupil completed his 400m freestyle in 3:59.56.

Shortly before her, Mewen Tomac had launched the last evening of the France team. After winning the title in the 50m backstroke on Wednesday and in the 100m backstroke on Friday, the swimmer from Amiens this time hung the bronze medal in the 200m backstroke by completing the distance in 1′48"55, a new record for France. The top three finishers in the race are separated by twelve hundredths. In the same final, Yohann Ndoye Brouard took fifth place.
