It was the oldest world record in swimming, both short and long courses combined. He completed a hat-trick of gold medals in Romania, following victories in the 400m and 1500m. Ireland's Daniel Wiffen won the 800m freestyle at the European Short Course Championships, breaking the world record for the distance, on Sunday in Otopeni (Romania).

Wiffen won in 7:20.46, breaking Australia's Grant Hackett's old record of 2008:7.23 from 42.

It was the oldest world record in swimming, both short and long courses combined. Wiffen, 22, completed a hat-trick of gold medals in Romania, following victories in the 400m and 1500m.
