Maccabi Tel Aviv returned to winning ways in the Euroleague on Thursday night with a 86:95 victory over Turkey's Anadolu Efes in a game held at Maccabi's home arena in Belgrade. The victory returned Maccabi to the playoff zone with a record of eight wins against six losses, three games from the end of the first round.

The Yellows started the game excellently, ran away to a 9-point lead in the first quarter, before registering almost two very weak quarters, letting Anadolu take control of the match, with the turning point coming 4 minutes to the end of the third quarter, when Oded Ketch brought in a different five, turned the game around and in the last quarter Maccabi managed to control matters and come away with the victory.

Lorenzo Brown was the Yellowjackets' leading scorer with 21 points and 5 assists, with Bonzi Coulson adding 19 points and 7 rebounds, but Tamir Blatt recorded the victory with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. James Webb had an excellent game as well with 14 points. On the other hand, Wade Baldwin was very weak with 4 points and was not involved at all in the final quarter.

"A big win over a good team of zero that was missing some players," Lorenzo Brown summed up the victory, "We stayed focused, we didn't worry about who they were missing, and we won the game. Tamir has been good for us all season, he comes in and does the job, he's a great shooter, and a great point guard, we have players who bring a lot to the table and that's what we need. We made a lot of stops in the last quarter. We needed this win for our sanity, we're back on our feet and we're looking forward to the next game."

The quintet that led Maccabi's comeback in the final quarter was far from routine for the Yellows. Tamir Blatt coordinated, Anthony Cleveland assisted him as another guard, James Webb played the No. 3 position, and under the basket Roman Sorkin and Jaciel Rivero played. Later, help finish the game were Bonzi Coulson and Lorenzo Brown.

"There are games where you have to find this particular line-up that will finish the job," the club said, "It's a different win, a win for the players who don't get the credit. Tamir, James and Cleveland, which was very important in the last quarter."

"It was a good win for us to get back to ourselves, after the loss to Bologna, in the second half we guarded better and that gave us the advantage, we have to keep the momentum going and prepare for the next game," Bonzi Coulson said. I played in Turkey for two years and I know Anadolu, I try to play on both sides of the pitch and have fun no matter what's going on around me. The important thing is to continue this victory for the double week."

Wade Baldwin had a very weak night last night, scoring 4 points and finishing with a minus-1 rating. Baldwin already had weak games in the yellow uniform, and the brave decision Oded Ketch made was not to go with him from the moment he took him out, less than 5 minutes into the third quarter. Baldwin remained positive on the bench, cheered on his teammates and, despite his emotions, finished the evening satisfied with the victory.

Maccabi Tel Aviv had sources who were not surprised by Baldwin's weak performance at the end of a week in which he did not train with the team, following the announcement of the process at the end of which a cut in players' salaries is expected. As the game progressed, it seemed like the guard just couldn't get into the game until Ketch gave it up.

"It's not easy for a coach to take this step, to leave whoever is supposed to be your star out in the decisive moments," said one Maccabi member from Belgrade, "Oded knew that with Wade it wouldn't go today, he tried it, it's not like he gives it up after a few moments. It sends a message to the team that no matter who you are, at the end of the day what matters is team success, and if you're not good today, you won't play."

As we reported earlier this week, Maccabi Tel Aviv is at the end of a process with the Euroleague players' association, which is supposed to help the team cope with the difficult financial situation it found itself in following the move to a closed-door game in Belgrade. At the end of the process, the players' salaries will be cut, by a percentage that should be slightly higher than 10, and the situation will return to normal if Maccabi returns to host Tel Aviv.

In the meantime, the club admits, they are forced to deal with the difficult situation, and dissatisfaction on the part of the players, "You can understand players who are frustrated by this situation," one Maccabi official said this week, "At the end of the day, they found themselves in this situation. They got caught up in a war, a war that hurts them too, not just professionally."

The person who was Maccabi's guest of honor at the game is 12-year-old Eitan Yahalomi, who was recently released from Hamas captivity. Yahalomi, whose father is still a fan in Gaza, was the guest of the Yellows the day after he was Barak Behar's guest at Red Star Belgrade's game against Manchester City.

Yahalomi's hospitality came at the end of a week in which the Yellows hosted the families of the abductees and fallen at the team's training before Bnei Herzliya, and after an emotional visit by Roman Sorkin and Rafi Manko to Nir Boimplak, a fan of the team, Deputy Commander 13 who was hit in the head on October 7 in the battle for Nahal Oz.
