The coach of the XV of France Fabien Galthié justified his choice to appoint Grégory Alldritt as captain in place of Charles Ollivo

The coach of the French XV Fabien Galthié spoke for the first time since the announcement of the 34 players selected for the next Six Nations Tournament.

Questioned by Midi Olympique, he returned to the first strong choice of his second mandate: the captaincy given to Grégory Alldritt, which we revealed on Wednesday morning.

“Greg’s level of play is already essential,” replied the coach.

“We also wanted to develop leadership among these senior players,” continued Galthié.

In the absence of Antoine Dupont, held back by preparation for the Olympic Games, the cards were reshuffled and the staff's choice fell on Alldritt, rather than Charles Ollivon.

The Basque was, however, the first captain of the Galthié era before his serious injury (2021-22) and had regained the captaincy after Dupont's maxyllo-zygomatic fracture during the World Cup.

Ollivon “happy”, assures Galthié

“His age (26 years) can also make us think that he will be, like 70 or 80% of the team, in Australia in 2027,” Galthié said about Alldritt. “I obviously wholeheartedly wish to bring Charles up to at the World Cup but Greg is four years younger and his turn has come to take the captaincy, due to his development.

» Another, not insignificant, advantage is that the third center line from La Rochelle speaks perfect English, due to his Scottish origins.

“He understands Anglo-Saxon mentalities,” continued Galthié, who wants “there to be only one player who speaks to the referee”.

As for Ollivon, he was not initially disappointed by this change of captaincy.

“He was happy with Greg’s appointment.

However, he was very worried about Charles' reaction.

In this sense, our meetings were also very beautiful to see,” he explained.
