In a ceremony held at Beit HaLochem Tel Aviv last night (Wednesday) the Paralympic Committee and the Association for Disabled Sports announced the outstanding athletes for 2023. The athlete of the year, for the second time in a row, is Ami Dedown from Ilan Haifa.
Dedown returned from the World Championships in Manchester with four gold medals and a new world record.
Jacob Binanson, who coaches Dedown, was chosen as coach of the year.
The athlete of the year, like last year, is Yulia Chernoi, from Beit HaLochem Tel Aviv, who trains with Guy Strick. Yulia, who was the first of all the athletes to secure her place in Paris, won a gold medal and a bronze medal at the World Championships held in Peru.
This year's discovery badge was awarded to taekwondo fighter Adnan Milad, who trains with Yachiam Sharabi at the Sharabi Martial Arts Club.
The award for the young sportsman named Barak Lufen was given this year to kayaker Adi Ezra from the Jordan Valley Club. The award was given to him by Dana Lufen, the widow of Barak, an athlete and coach, who was killed in a murderous attack on Dizengoff Street about two years ago.
The Chairman of the Paralympic Committee, Moshe "Mutz" Matlon said: "This is a difficult and complex year in which, along with the preparations for the games in Paris that will take place in another 7 months, we faced, and we are still facing, the challenges of the war, and the challenges of the budget being cut, and despite all this, we have to reach To Paris in the best way, to win and bring honor to the country especially this year, in front of those who seek our help in the world."
