ran, in vain, all his life.

The former Minister of Youth and Sports in the Alain Juppé government (between May 1995 and June 1997) triumphed in the 110 m hurdles where sixteen years earlier, Jazy had failed, settling for the silver medal on 1 500 m at the Rome Olympics in 1960. The two men, originally from Hauts-de-France, remained close throughout their lives.

They were born in the same street, in Oignies (Pas-de-Calais).
