Franz Beckenbauer leaves an impressive legacy.

His highlight and probably his happiest moment was the 2006 World Cup in his own country.

Munich - Franz Beckenbauer, both a world champion as a player and as a coach, has left his footprint deep in German football.

But the “Emperor,” as he is often called, achieved even more.

He brought the 2006 Football World Cup to Germany and gave people an unforgettable experience, the “Summer Fairy Tale”.

This tournament should be his legacy, especially for himself.

Franz Beckenbauer married during the 2006 World Cup

Franz Beckenbauer died on January 7th, and FC Bayern honored the club legend with a large memorial service.

Uli Hoeneß, a long-time friend and companion of Beckenbauer, described the 2006 World Cup as the “emperor’s” masterpiece.

Hoeneß also told an acclaimed anecdote about Beckenbauer that took place in a hotel in Fiji where Beckenbauer was only seen in his underwear.

Marcus Höfl, Beckenbauer's long-time manager, was always at his side during the 2006 World Cup.

In the ARD documentary “Beckenbauer – Legend of German Football” he remembers their times together and said: “We saw 48 of 64 games, and in between we packed in the wedding so that as few people as possible noticed.”

Höfl is the husband of the former ski racer Maria Höfl-Riesch, who was very affected after Beckenbauer's death.

On June 23, 2006, Beckenbauer married Heidrun Burmester, the former secretary of FC Bayern.

Beckenbauer and his manager Höfl share a goosebumps moment before the World Cup final

Höfl continues: “It was so intense, there was so little sleep, there were so many new experiences every day that you couldn’t even process.”

It was only shortly before the World Cup final that some kind of relief seemed to come.

“On the final day, in the afternoon, we stood together in the Adlon on the first floor and waited for it to finally start.

We then looked out the window together and there were 400,000 or 500,000 people from all countries, it was the most peaceful festival,” remembers Höfl.

The Germans celebrated the World Cup in their own country with great pride and created a cosmopolitan and friendly image, especially through the fan miles.

The motto “the world is a guest of friends” was put into practice.

“This is how the good Lord imagined the world”: Beckenbauer’s highlight gives you goosebumps

“I then saw a very satisfied expression on his face and then he said to himself: 'This is how the good Lord imagined the world,'” says Höfl, describing what is probably the happiest moment in Beckenbauer's life.

“It was already clear to him that this was the highlight of his life.”

“And I can remember that it started when he drove Joel (youngest son; editor's note) to school and that he often called on the way back,” adds Höfl.

“Then I said: 'Yes, where have you been?', then he said: 'Yes, I went to church now'.

Then I asked, 'What are we praying for now, what's next?'

Then he said: 'No, we don't pray for anything anymore, we just say thank you'."
