Japanese professional boxer Kazuki Anaguchi died this Friday at the age of 23 following a brain hemorrhage, several specialist media report.

The athlete had been in a coma since his brain operation on December 26.

The intervention aimed to treat injuries suffered during his fight against his compatriot Seiya Tsutsumi.

Kazuki Anaguchi, 23, had fought seven fights for a record of six victories, including two by knockout, and one defeat.

Facing Tsutsumi, he was trying to win the bantamweight title.

But Anaguchi was seized by convulsions in a corner of the ring, at the end of ten rounds.

It was also the first 10-round fight of his young professional career, which began in 2021.

Subdural hematoma

Rushed to a hospital in Tokyo, the boxer underwent emergency surgery to treat a subdural hematoma (caused when trauma tears a vein on the brain).

Anaguchi never woke up from the coma he was left in following the operation.

After the announcement of his death, tributes followed on social networks, fans of the noble art saluting a “true warrior” who “gave everything he had in the ring”.

Kazuki Anaguchi was also a renowned boxer in the amateur world, where he had a record of 68 victories in 74 fights.

His tragic death was announced this Friday at 5:38 p.m. local time.
