Heidi Beckenbauer, widow of Franz Beckenbauer, who died on January 7th, invited around 100 friends and companions to the private funeral service for her husband in the ballroom of the Munich luxury hotel Four Seasons Kempinski on Thursday morning.

Access was therefore strictly guarded; security guards with buttons in their ears stood in the lobby and in front of the “Maximilian” ballroom.
The high-profile guests are said to have been intercepted immediately after arriving at the hotel and led inside via a secret passage on the side.
Uli Hoeneß, who quickly hung up when Heidi Beckenbauer told him the news of his death, thanked his long-time companion for his friendship.

There were also illustrious names on the guest list: ex-Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, President Herbert Hainer, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, CFO Michael Diederich, football legends Rudi Völler, Franz “Bulle” Roth, Sepp Maier, Paul Breitner, Lothar Matthäus, Stefan Reuter, Klaus Augenthaler, Pierre Littbarski and Karl-Heinz Riedle.
Günther Jauch, ex-ski racer Maria Höfl-Riesch with her husband Marcus Höfl and ex-swimming ace Franzi van Almsick also said goodbye.
In memory of Franz Beckenbauer, each guest received a gift bag.
Inside was a Beckenbauer special edition of the Bayern magazine and two red wine glasses.
“No one can separate good friends,” it says in white letters, along with the signature of the emperor himself.
Thomas Beckenbauer also recently spoke about his late father.
