The run continued despite a modest performance: SV Werder Bremen also narrowly won the Bundesliga game on matchday 20 against 1. FSV Mainz 1-0 (1-0).

The DeichStube match report.

Mainz – Third win in a row, unbeaten in seven games:

SV Werder Bremen

continued its impressive run of success in the Bundesliga and secured a 1-0 (1-0) away win at

FSV Mainz 05

on Saturday afternoon .

Marvin Ducksch

scored the goal of the day

after just two minutes.

After that, however, only the home team played, and an offensively harmless Werder shuddered their way to victory in the end.

After 20 match days, head coach Ole Werner's team has more than a decent 26 points and is suddenly closer to international business than the relegation zone.

In addition, after three Bundesliga games so far, Bremen can now call themselves the sole leaders of the second half of the season.

Ole Werner

left his last successful starting line-up

unchanged, although this was not entirely voluntary.

Mitchell Weiser, who missed the Freiburg game due to an adductor injury, was actually supposed to return to the first team.

That's what it already said on the line-up sheet.

Shortly before kick-off, the role went backwards: Weiser took a seat on the bench and

Olivier Deman

replaced him.

Apparently the right winger had experienced problems during the warm-up.

Deman, in turn, was involved in SV Werder Bremen

's dream start to the game just a little later

.

Werder Bremen gets off to a flying start: Marvin Ducksch uses a gift from 1. FSV Mainz 05 to score the golden goal

Only two minutes had passed when the Belgian brought the ball flat into the Mainz penalty area, where central defender Anthony Caci shot at his teammate Tom Krauß.

Werder striker

Marvin Ducksch

reacted quickest, shot from the turn and scored the early 1-0.

The afternoon couldn't have started much better for the guests in the

Mewa Arena

, as they had already started the game with a lot of tailwind, unlike Mainz, who had been without a win since the beginning of November.

After the tour, however, there wasn't much to be seen.

Werder Bremen

were

very lucky that Krauss didn't score a quick equalizer in the 17th minute.

Ducksch had lost a duel on the outside line against Mainz's winter newcomer

Nadiem Amiri

(came from Bayer Leverkusen), shortly afterwards Leandro Barreiro served the free-standing Krauß, who failed to hit the

post

from around 18 meters .

In the first half, this remained by far the most dangerous scene in Mainz, but overall the Bremen backline did not exude much security.

Werder prevented themselves from calming the game with unnecessary mistakes and repeatedly put their opponents in promising situations.

On the other hand, there were definitely counterattack opportunities.

In one of them,

Romano Schmid

finished too late (25th), in another, after an extremely precise throw by goalkeeper

Michael Zetterer

,

Justin Njinmah

narrowly missed his goal (42nd).

Werder Bremen were under a lot of pressure in Mainz - but with the necessary bit of luck to win away

At the beginning of the second half, the home team came out of the locker room with a lot of momentum and kept going.

It was clear to the team that they had to gradually gain points in the relegation battle in order not to lose touch early on.

Werder Bremen

didn't do much in terms of play

in this phase, almost nothing, but the guests still managed to somehow get a foot in front of the ball in the crucial moments, so that chances for

Mainz 05

remained scarce - until the 61st minute.

Jessic Ngankam, Mainz's second winter signing (on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt), finished in the penalty area and forced Zetterer into a truly brilliant performance.

The equalizer would have been deserved long ago at this point.

Even after that, only

1. FSV Mainz 05

played, who had the next opportunities

through

Ludovic Ajorque

and

Karim Onisiwo .

Onisiwo was blocked by Schmid at the very last moment (66'), before Ajorque's header from a corner failed (67').

Shortly afterwards, Werder coach

Ole Werner

had enough and brought three fresh players into the game at once.

Both the double striker Ducksch/Njinmah and Schmid had to leave the field, but Rafael Borré and

Nick Woltemade

as well as

Leonardo Bittencourt

(69th) came on - in the hope of being able to revive

SV Werder Bremen

's completely weakened offensive once again.

But there were still only opportunities on the other side.

The best of them: In the 82nd minute, Onisiwo narrowly missed making it 1-1 with a header.

It was the last notable scene of the game, after which everyone in the Green-Whites was understandably happy - and the relief was probably even greater.

Werder continues next Saturday with the home game against promoted team 1. FC Heidenheim (3:30 p.m.).

(dco)

Werder Bremen:

 Zetterer – Jung, Friedl, Stark – Agu (90th + 3 Malatini), Weiser – Lynen, Stage (86th Groß), Schmid (69th Bittencourt) – Ducksch (69th Borré), Njinmah ( 69. Woltemade)

Final score: 1-0 for Werder.

5:29 p.m.: This means the live ticker says goodbye for today.

We'll be reading this again next Saturday when we play at home against Heidenheim at 3:30 p.m.!

As usual, you can read all the important voices and information about today's game here in the DeichStube in the next few hours and days.

Have a nice weekend!

5:25 p.m.: After a purely fighting performance, Werder wins the game 1-0.

In the end, the statistics show 20:6 shots on goal for Rheinhessen, but Werder couldn't care less about that.

Despite an underground offensive performance and a defensively combative performance, Bremen achieved their third success in a row.

This often required a strong hustler in the second half, but also a good deal of luck.

With this success, the Green-Whites jumped to eighth place in the table and also took first place in the second half of the season.

90+6 min: Shortly afterwards it's over!

Werder wins 1-0 in Mainz!

90+6 min: Incredible moments!

The advanced goalkeeper Zentner moves up and claims the ball several times, but in the end Fernandes shoots over the goal.

Good luck for Werder!

90+5 min:

The last minute is running and there is another free kick for Mainz...

90+3 min:

Werder makes one last change: Julian Malatini comes on for Felix Agu.

90+3 min:

The home team is under constant pressure, but Werder bravely defends every ball.

High tension in Mainz!

90+1 min:

There are five minutes of added time!

Werder wobbles enormously, but somehow tries to get over the finish line.

90th min:

Phew!

Take a deep breath at Werder.

Barreiro finishes from close range, but puts it just over the goal.

Shortly afterwards, the linesman raised the flag because Barreiro was just offside.

88th min:

Bittencourt and Lynen cleverly push Caci out onto the wing.

There is then a brief argument between Werder's number ten and the Mainz defender.

Both receive a yellow card for this.

86th min:

Ole Werner makes another change: Jens Stage leaves the field, but Christian Groß is supposed to save the victory over time.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the DeichStube live ticker: Onisiwo with the chance to equalize - Werder wobbles

82nd min: Onisiwo with a great chance to equalize!

After a long free kick, Ajorque is the first to prevail in the duel and extend the ball into the six-yard box.

There Onisiwo comes to the header, but puts the ball just over the crossbar.

Werder is shaking!

81st min:

Woltemade and Borre now hold on to a few balls better and draw fouls.

This means Werder can take some of the pressure off themselves.

79th min:

Amiri rightly sees a yellow card after a foul on Woltemade.

78th min:

Bittencourt misses a promising counterattack opportunity.

Three Bremen attackers run towards three defenders, but Werder's midfielder misses the pass, so the action comes to nothing.

77th min:

On the other side, Borre tries a long-range shot, but this is also a few meters too high and is therefore not dangerous.

75th min:

Rheinhessen's eleventh corner is also dangerous.

Caci looks for the shot from the back, but it ends up a few meters above the goal.

73rd min:

Bittencourt introduces himself with two successful tackles.

72nd min:

Another offensive change for the home team.

Richter comes onto the pitch for Krauss.

71st min:

Twenty minutes left to play.

Mainz is pushing with all its might for an equalizer, but Werder is fighting for the three points.

It will still be an intense and long final phase for Ole Werner's men.

69th min:

Ole Werner reacts to the current phase and makes a three-man change: Ducksch, Schmid and Njinmah have to leave the pitch.

Woltemade, Bittencourt and Borre are now in play.

66th min: What a tackle from Schmid!

After a corner, Ajorque is completely free at the far post.

The big striker takes the ball with his chest and looks for the finish, but Schmid heroically throws himself into the shot.

The ball ends up blocked next to the goal.

Great action from the Austrian international.

65th min:

A short time later, Agu picks up speed on the right side.

However, his well-intentioned pass to the starting Ducksch turns out to be far too long and is unusable.

64th min:

After a good cross from the left, Ducksch suddenly has a lot of space in the penalty area, but the national player misses the ball so that a Mainz player can clarify the situation.

63rd min:

The guests change for the first time in this encounter: Ajorque comes into the game for Burkhardt.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the DeichStube live ticker: Zetterer saves Werder from the equalizer

61st min: Zetterer with a monster parade!

Ngankam finishes from close range, but the Bremen goalkeeper is outstanding and directs the shot over the box.

58th min:

Sepp van den Berg gives SVW the second Bremen corner of the game with an unsuccessful header return.

However, this brings in nothing afterwards.

We would like to report chances to score, but these are currently in short supply on both sides.

57th min:

Stark and Onisiwo in particular have a lot of tough duels.

This time the Bremen defender is the winner and clears a Mainz attack in his own six-yard box.

55th min:

Despite the efforts of the 05ers, Werder managed to slow down the flow of the game significantly again.

Not much dangerous is currently happening on either side.

52nd min:

The home team gets almost every other ball around the Bremen penalty area.

But in the end, a Werder defensive leg always gets in the way of a shot from Mainz.

The SVW still lives very dangerously here!

50th min:

There are immediately a lot of tough duels again.

Today's game is really not for football aesthetes.

48th min:

Mainz comes out of the catacombs with a lot of steam.

Werder must immediately overcome a small period of pressure.

46th min

: It immediately becomes dangerous in front of the Bremen goal.

After a counterattack, Jung clears the ball in front of the incoming Amiri in the penalty area.

Very important action from Werder's number 3.

46th min:

Both teams start the second half unchanged in terms of personnel.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the DeichStube live ticker: The second half is underway

46th min: The players are back on the pitch.

The second half is underway!

4:18 p.m.:

The start of the game couldn't have gone better from the Green-Whites' perspective.

After a Mainz defense, Marvin Ducksch took advantage of the situation to take an early lead (2nd minute).

Afterwards, however, there wasn't much to be seen from Werder on the offensive.

The game was characterized by many duels and ball losses.

Bremen only really had to worry about taking the lead once, when Krauss shot against the post (18th minute).

Shortly before the break, Njinmah had a good opportunity to make it 2-0, but his shot went just wide of the post.

Despite the lead, Ole Werner's men have to improve their possession of the ball in the second half in order to take home the three points.

45+2.

Min: Nothing else will happen during this time.

Werder goes into the break with a 1-0 lead in Mainz.

45th min:

There are two minutes of injury time in the first half!

45th min:

Many direct duels in a row in midfield.

After a clear foul on Lynen was not whistled, the referee ruled a foul on a tackle from Stage on Amiri.

The Dane receives his fifth yellow card.

A very hard decision.

42nd min: Great opportunity for Werder!

Zetterer first safely intercepts a corner and immediately switches quickly.

With a long throw, the Bremen keeper sends Njinmah on his way.

The striker dances past an opponent and runs towards the penalty area.

His shot lands a few centimeters away from the post and into the goal.

Great attack from Bremen!

40th min:

Agu with a dangerous cross in front of the Mainz goal.

Stage comes rushing out of the background, but the Dane commits an offensive foul in an aerial duel with Caci.

38th min:

But Werder defends the situation again.

Despite the errors in their own offensive game, the performance of the Bremen defense so far must be expressly praised.

37th min:

Another corner for the home team...

34th min:

Stark comes way too late in the duel with Amiri on the outside line and is therefore rightly shown a yellow card.

31st min:

Half an hour has been played and Werder is currently wobbling.

Even though there haven't been a lot of big chances for Mainz, the Rheinhessen have been the better team since the 15th minute of the game at the latest.

29th min:

The home side keep trying to use the wings, but so far the Bremen central defenders in the penalty area have often been the winners in direct duels.

Werder still urgently needs to improve again.

The Bremen men haven't had enough possession of the ball for over ten minutes.

27th minute:

The number of inaccurate passes has increased enormously on both sides.

This means that there is a lot of back and forth, but there is no real flow of the game.

25th min:

There was a counter-attack opportunity for Werder, but Schmid delayed too long in the penalty area so that a Mainz defensive leg blocked the Austrian's final attempt.

Once again, more was possible for Bremen.

24th min:

Once again it's Amiri with the shot from distance, but again it's not a real problem for Zetterer.

Nevertheless, the home team has been the more dangerous team in the last few minutes.

22nd min:

Stark spectacularly clears a possible counterattack on the left side with a tackle against Burkhardt.

Bremen are still wide awake here, except for the shot on the post.

20th min:

Ducksch tries a deep pass from Njinmah, but the pass is a tad too long.

19th min:

The game in this phase relies on many tough duels.

The home team is currently fighting its way back into this game, but Werder is holding out.

17th minute:

Post - lucky for Werder!

Amiri directs the ball into the backcourt shortly after the corner.

Krauss stands there completely alone and puts the leather against the post.

Zetterer wouldn't have had a chance to defend himself there.

16th min:

Amiri puts a free kick next to the goal, but Stage was still on the ball. There is a corner kick for the 05er...

14th min:

An action that represents Bremen's new self-image.

Despite Mainz's high pressing, Werder combined calmly from the back.

In the end Stage is fouled.

Hats off!

12th min:

Nadiem Amiri's first action.

The loan player from Leverkusen takes heart from a distance, but the shot tumbles into the arms of Zetterer.

The home team hasn't really threatened in front of the Bremen goal yet.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the DeichStube live ticker: Werder with the dream start by Marvin Ducksch

10th min: Deman with a great chance to make it 2-0!

After a Schmid pass, Agu brings the ball dangerously in front of the goal.

There, Deman prevails against his opponent in the aerial duel, but the ball goes relatively clearly over the Mainz box from a short distance.

There was more possible for Werder.

8th min:

The home team now has a little more possession of the ball, but both Lynen and Deman pay attention twice and clarify the situation.

The Rheinhessen are still trying to get a quick answer.

5th min:

Despite the Weiser shock, Bremen come into this game perfectly and wide awake.

On the other side, Mwene tries a cross from the baseline, but Anthony Jung heads the ball out of the danger zone.

Great start from Werder!

3rd min:

What a start for Werder in this game.

After a cross from Deman, two Mainz defenders shoot at each other while trying to clear the ball.

The ball lands in the penalty area in front of Ducksch's foot, who stays ice cold and hits the bottom left of the post.

2nd min

:

Tooooorrrrr for Werder!

Marvin Ducksch with the early goal!

2nd min:

Due to Weiser's failure, Agu moves back to his usual position as right-back.

Olivier Deman takes over on the left side.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against 1. FSV Mainz 05: The game is on!

1st Min: The game is on!

The ball is rolling in Mainz.

3:27 p.m.:

The two teams enter the MEWA Arena in Mainz and Deman is actually in the starting line-up and Weiser takes a seat on the bench.

It's starting here any minute!

3:24 p.m.:

Information comes from the stadium that Olivier Deman is warming up intensively and it looks like he will be out for a short time.

Apparently Mitchell Weiser has to pass after all.

3:22 p.m.:

But the Werder fans will probably also have a great atmosphere again today, as around 4,000 Green-White supporters are in the stadium.

This means the guest block is sold out.

So we're getting ready for an electric atmosphere.

3:19 p.m.:

And Heidel followed up with a clear appeal to the Rheinhessen fans: “We need everyone from Mainz in the arena, on Saturday and also on Wednesday.

Werder Bremen has to play against an entire city."

3:17 p.m.:

The importance of today's game and next Wednesday's catch-up game against Union Berlin was made clear by Mainz sports director Christian Heidel before the game: "We go into the games with the clear goal of... to win.

We definitely have two key games of this season ahead of us.

Every player understood that.”

3:14 p.m.:

If Werder wins today, it would be their third win in a row.

The last time that happened was in March 2019. The third opponent at that time: Mainz 05, of course!

With a success, Bremen would also stay in eighth place in the table.

3:12 p.m.:

After the two surprise victories and convincing performances against Bayern and Freiburg, today's game marks the start of the weeks of truth in Bremen.

Mainz, Heidenheim, Cologne and Darmstadt are Werder's upcoming opponents.

Ole Werner's team therefore has it in their own hands to set the course for a “worry-free season” at an early stage.

3:08 p.m.:

Mainz are currently in last place in the Bundesliga home table with just five points.

Bremen were in last place in the away table until two weeks ago, but after the win in Munich, SVW is now in 12th place in the away rankings. 3:05 p.m

.:

Bremen managed a total of four points from their last two away games in Mainz kidnap.

In the last duel in the 2022/23 season, Niclas Füllkrug scored the equalizer late in stoppage time.

In the Green-Whites' year of relegation, Eren Dinkci scored Bremen's 1-0 away win, also in the final minute.

3:03 p.m.:

The balance between the two teams, especially in recent years, is much more balanced.

Overall, Mainz have won this duel eleven times in the Bundesliga, while Werder were able to leave the pitch as winners 15 times.

Both clubs ended in a draw in seven matches.

2.59 p.m.:

The current second-to-last in the table won't really remember the first leg on matchday 3 at Bremen's Wohninvest Weserstadion with any fondness.

Werder managed a convincing and clear 4-0 home win there.

The goalscorers at the time were Ducksch, Stage, Bittencourt and Njinmah.

For the latter it was the first Bundesliga goal.

2:56 p.m.:

In general, the season so far has been rather modest from the Rheinhessen perspective.

After a poor start to the season, Bo Svensson had to vacate his coaching chair at the beginning of November.

Things are going a little better in terms of points under successor Jan Siewert, but Mainz have only had one win this season so far.

The team has now been waiting for a win for eight games.

2:53 p.m.:

Jessic Ngankam, a striker from Eintracht Frankfurt, was loaned until the end of the season.

The 05ers urgently need fresh offensive forces, as they have the second worst offense in the league with 14 goals scored after 18 games.

In the last eight games, Mainz have only scored three goals of their own.

2:51 p.m.:

But not only were Bremen active twice shortly before the end of the transfer window, but today's opponent has also strengthened.

With Nadiem Amiri from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the Mainz team acquired a creative playmaker who has also been traded more often in Bremen in recent years.

2:48 p.m.:

The second new guy goes by the name Isac

Hansen-Aarøen and comes from Manchester United's U21.

Werder signed the midfielder on deadline day.

The 19-year-old is considered a creative player and will help shape Bremen's midfield over the next few years.

Today, however, the Norwegian is not yet in the squad after just one training session with his new colleagues.

2.45 p.m.:

And as if all that wasn't enough for the green and white Werder soul, those responsible for Bremen conjured up two more transfers this week.

First, the aforementioned Skelly Alvero was loaned from Olympique Lyon until the end of the season.

Werder then has a purchase option for the 21-year-old Frenchman in the summer.

2:42 p.m.:

What kind of past two weeks were Werder?

The historic victory at Bayern was followed last week by the announcement of a strategic partner and then a furious 3-1 home win against European Cup participants SC Freiburg.

This means that Bremen have been unbeaten in six games in the Bundesliga and are in tenth place in the table before this game.

2.38 p.m.:

And of course the introduction of today's referees shouldn't be missed.

The game is led by Benjamin Brand.

He is assisted on the sidelines by Guido Kleve and Dr.

Arne Aarnink.

Benedikt Kempkes is on duty as the fourth official.

In the Cologne basement, Katrin Rafalski as VAR checks the controversial situations of the game.

2:36 p.m.: Let's take a quick look at the 05er staff.

The home team starts with the following line-up: Zentner - Widmer, van den Berg, Caci, Mwene - Krauß, Barreiro - Burkhardt, Amiri, Onisiwo - Ngankam

2.34 p.m.:

Werder coach Ole Werner opts for the middle path and changes his starting eleven to one Position.

However, a new addition does not come directly into the first eleven, but Mitchell Weiser returns to the starting line-up after his injury for Olivier Deman.

2.32 p.m.:

And unlike last week, the Werder bench is again filled with nine players.

The following players take their seats there at kick-off: Pavlenka, Deman, Kownacki, Bittencourt, Borré, Malatini, Alvero, Woltemade and Groß.

Werder's new signing Skelly Alvero from Olympique Lyon is in the Bremen squad for the first time after his transfer on Wednesday.

The North Germans, who are coming with a tailwind, also have four groundbreaking games against their direct competitors in the coming weeks:

FSV Mainz 05

, 1. FC Heidenheim, 1. FC Köln and Darmstadt 98, after which, with optimal results, a huge step towards staying in the league could be made.

But

Ole Werner

doesn't want to look that far ahead.

“We would be wise to focus all the energy we have on the next task.

We don't look any further, you don't always have to open up the big picture."

says the head coach of

SV Werder Bremen

.

This means: First of all, after the victories against FC Bayern (1:0) and Freiburg (3:1)

, SV Werder Bremen
