Andreas Wellinger wins the ski jumping in Willingen.

The ARD switches off early.

The broadcaster is responding to the anger of many fans.

Willingen – Ski jumping in Willingen on Sunday was characterized by constant rain and changing winds.

The bad weather conditions caused long waiting times and interruptions - the holding of the second round was even in jeopardy.

In the end, Andreas Wellinger was able to celebrate his second victory of this World Cup season.

“Thanks to everyone who waited so long in this shitty weather and cheered us on,” said Wellinger, who managed a sensational comeback after 139.0 m and seventh place in the first round with a dream flight of 149 m.

But not everyone wanted or could wait that long, the ARD sports show had already ended the broadcast at this point - TV viewers were staring at Wellinger's coup.

ARD switches off early after Wellinger's victory in Willingen - TV viewers stunned

The first round in Willingen was shown live on ARD.

However, that changed in the second round.

Due to the capricious weather at the Mühlenkopfschanze, the “Tagesschau” and “Report from Berlin” were shown on the first instead of Wellinger’s victory.

This naturally annoyed the observers on the screens.

A user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “ARD ended the ski jumping broadcast early.

 I hold back from characterizing

's competence  .

Only for those responsible at ARD: Alexander Wellinger won!”

(Wellinger’s first name is Andreas, editor’s note)

.

Another fan reacted with gallows humor: “Wellinger wins the home World Cup in Willingen and the ARD cancels the live broadcast and broadcasts a report from Berlin, which of course you can't miss under any circumstances.

Awkward!"

ARD explains decision against ski jumping on TV

ARD felt compelled to respond to the comments of the surprised fans.

The broadcaster announced that the jumping could still be seen live in the stream on sportschau.de.

Eurosport also showed the second round in full length.

The sports show explained on Instagram: “Unfortunately, the weather in Willingen put a damper on the program planning.

We can't just overturn these.” The ski jumping in Willingen was apparently not important enough to change the program at short notice or to cancel other programs.

“Instead, as a compromise, we continued to offer jumping in the live stream.

Since we are not a pure sports channel, sometimes other programs simply take priority for us.”

Wellinger triumphs in Willingen, but ARD ends the broadcast beforehand

Some TV viewers may have missed Wellinger's victory.

"That's incredible.

There was really a lot of rain today.

A lot of rain,” said the completely soaked Bavarian after his second win of the season in the Ski Jumping World Cup.

As with his triumph on the Mühlenkopfschanze in 2017, he turned Willingen into a blissful “Wellingen”.

Wellinger had already won the home game in Oberstdorf.

The 2018 Olympic champion relegated tour winner Ryoyu Kobayashi from Japan to second place.

The Swiss Gregor Deschwanden came third.

The Pole Aleksander Zniszczol, who was surprisingly in the lead after the first round, fell back to eighth place.

Karl Geiger disappointed with Wellinger's victory

The second best German on Sunday was Stephan Leyhe (Willingen) in eleventh place.

On Saturday, the local hero, who celebrated his only World Cup victory to date in his homeland in 2020, achieved the best result for the disappointing DSV Adler in 15th place - two positions ahead of Wellinger.

Previously, at least one DSV Adler had finished in the top 5 in every competition of the season.

Stephan Leyhe (11th), Pius Paschke (25th) and Philipp Raimund (26th) fell a few places back in the second round.

Like the day before, Karl Geiger (31st) and Felix Hoffmann (36th) missed the final of the best 30 jumpers.
