Highlights: Thomas Meunier will leave Borussia Dortmund with immediate effect. The 32-year-old defender joins the Turkish fourth-placed Trabzonspor. The defender was not nominated for the Champions League a few days ago. BVB star Thomas Meunier is leaving Dortmund for Türkiye.

The defender was not nominated for the Champions League a few days ago.

Update from Wednesday, February 7th, 1:14 p.m.:

Borussia Dortmund has now officially announced what was already suspected.

Thomas Meunier will leave BVB with immediate effect.

The 32-year-old defender joins the Turkish fourth-placed Trabzonspor.

“This week there was a short-term opportunity for Thomas to join a new club before the end of the transfer period.

We have fulfilled his wish for this change, would like to thank Thomas for his commitment and wish him all the best for his sporting and private future,” says Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

First report from Monday, February 5th, 6:26 p.m.:

Dortmund – There are two hot duels that await Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League round of 16.

Although PSV Eindhoven isn't one of the big clubs in terms of name, the Dutch are having a really strong season.

BVB star Meunier has been in demand in recent weeks – and is probably still not in the CL squad

Eindhoven has only lost two games so far in 2023/24 - on the first CL matchday against FC Arsenal (0:4) and at the end of January in the cup round of 16 against Feyenoord Rotterdam (0:1).

BVB coach Edin Terzic and Co. should be warned and think carefully about how they want to approach the clash with PSV around former Dortmund coach Peter Bosz.

One person who obviously won't play a role against Eindhoven and in possible further knockout rounds is Thomas Meunier.

As the

Ruhr Nachrichten

reports, the Belgian was not nominated for the decisive phase in the premier class.

The new additions Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho, on the other hand, have probably been registered, but Terzic decided not to make a third nomination.

Will BVB defender Thomas Meunier move to Trabzonspor in the winter?

Meunier was already missing in the first half of the season due to injury and was therefore not part of the CL squad, but he is now fit again and has been a regular member of the first team since December.

If he actually isn't there, it would come as a bit of a surprise.

Position colleague Julian Ryerson is still out of action, but it won't be long before the Norwegian makes a comeback.

Marius Wolf also no longer plays a major role.

However, rumors of change surrounding the 32-year-old suggest that he may not be nominated.

We hear from Turkey that Trabzonspor should think about a commitment.

This was also confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano via

on Monday afternoon (February 5th) , who reported on a basic agreement and advanced negotiations between the clubs.

It is possible that the deal will take place by Friday (February 9th).

Until then, the Süper Lig clubs can still bring in new players.

There were already reports in the summer of 2023 that Meunier could leave last season's runner-up.

Now is possibly the last chance to cash in on the defender.

As things stand, his contract expires in the summer of 2024 and an extension is extremely unlikely.
