Bastian Schweinsteiger caused a strange moment during the DFB Cup quarter-finals.

Some football fans felt like they had been transported back 20 years.

Leverkusen – It was a moment that made German TV history.

The football fans had just watched the German national team struggle (and their supporters) to a 0-0 draw in Iceland.

It was the epitome of an early noughties game.

The DFB rumbles without esprit and brilliance, ultimately they got the deserved acknowledgment at the 2004 European Championship with the embarrassing elimination from the group.

Bastian Schweinsteiger steps into Völler-Hartmann's faux pas

Immediately after those 90 minutes in Reykjavík on September 6, 2003, the then team boss Rudi Völler was invited to the ARD studio.

Moderator Waldemar Hartmann was waiting for him there, who had to listen to a lot of angry Völler in the following minutes.

The former world-class striker's frustration finally culminated in the following statement: "You're sitting here comfortably in your chair, you've drunk three wheat beers and you're nice and relaxed." A sentence that is legendary to this day - and on Tuesday evening (February 7, 2024 ) has probably come back to the memory of one or another football fan.

What happened?

Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart had just finished the first half of a fantastic DFB Cup quarter-final when Völler was a guest in the ARD half-time analysis.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Esther Sedlaczek were waiting for him there.

Schweinsteiger then made a faux pas at the worst possible time.

When he wanted to praise the Stuttgart captain Waldemar Anton, he said “Waldemar Hartma... er Anton” - the mere presence of Völler and the first name Waldemar suddenly gave Schweini the wrong associations.

Schweinsteiger faux pas at the worst possible time: fans laugh their heads off

Of course, the fans on the TVs heard the slip of the tongue and were having a great time on social networks.

Schweinsteiger unintentionally caused a lot of laughter - we summarize some of X's user reactions here:

  • There are easier ways to a quick death than mentioning Waldemar Hartmann when Rudi Völler is standing next to you, dear Bastian Schweinsteiger.

  • “It was very good from Waldemar Hartmann”: The best Freudian slip of the tongue in the sports show.

Schweinsteiger wants to praise Waldemar Anton and actually says that Waldemar Hartmann was the best player on the pitch - while he is standing next to Rudi Völler.

    Splendid.

  • But Rudi Völler was quite shocked when Schweinsteiger suddenly mentioned Waldemar Hartmann

  • “Waldemar Hartmann,” says Schweinsteiger to Anton.

Völler is about to ask him if he has three wheat in him again.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger thinks that Waldemar Hartmann was the player of the first half.

Meanwhile, Aunt Käthe next door has mentally put three Paulaners aside for after the final whistle.

Schweinsteiger gets around Hartmann's slip of the tongue in the best wheat beer style

Schweinsteiger, who received a direct swipe from Esther Sedlaczek at the beginning of the broadcast, and Völler didn't show anything and simply continued to analyze.

In true Waldemar Hartmann style, he very gallantly avoided the Völler attack and remarked that there was no wheat beer in Iceland.
