Two months after the unveiling of the new Super League project, UEFA stakeholders meet in Paris for the new Congress of the European football organization.
An opportunity for European leaders to denounce the Closed League project carried by Real Madrid and FC Barcelona since December 21, 2023. The leader of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, once again attacked this new attempt to the promoter company A22.
“Today some people are trying to trample on 70 years of history and change the history of football.
They are trying to pass themselves off as saviors of football when they are gravediggers,” denounced the Slovenian.
Then, the UEFA president criticized the alleged capital monopoly of the Super League leaders: “They want to separate us in the name of the market and in order to increasingly increase their income.”
Ceferin was also concerned about the historical break induced by the emergence of such a League, which he nevertheless contrasted with the rich heritage of UEFA competitions: “You cannot buy sporting merit, you cannot buy a story spanning several decades.
Despite this wish for firmness, Ceferin recalled that the teams had the choice to join this new competition while recalling the majority opposition of supporter groups to such a project: “Clubs are free to enter new competitions, no one "has not threatened to sanction them if they join what English fans call the Zombie League."
Faced with this Super League, the best weapon used by Ceferin remains the call for unity as he asserts in his speech: “We are going through difficult times, we know it, but unity is the only thing that keeps us will protect.”
