The “Emperor” has now been buried at the Perlach cemetery.

A delegation from Manchester United laid floral wreaths at the grave of the FC Bayern Munich club legend on Tuesday.

Airplane disaster was the reason for the visit

The English and German football record champions have a deep emotional connection.

The United delegation set off for the Bavarian capital on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the Manchester United plane disaster in Munich.

On February 6, 1958, a British European Airways plane exploded in Munich-Riem.

Inside was the Manchester United football team along with accompanying staff, fans and sports journalists.

The accident is commemorated on a stone.

“Manchester United and FC Bayern have deep mutual appreciation”

The pilot at the time noticed unusual pressure in the plane's engines and then aborted the take-off process twice.

Tragedy struck on the third attempt: the plane unexpectedly lost speed on the runway and there was no space left to brake.

The plane left the runway, broke through a fence and crashed into a residential building with one wing.

The rear was torn off and caught fire, the rest crashed into a wooden garage full of gasoline.

The machine exploded.

“It is a special honor for me that I can be part of this wreath-laying ceremony today,” Franz Roth is quoted as saying on the FC Bayern homepage.

“Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and the relationship with FC Bayern is characterized by deep mutual appreciation.” Roth was pleased about the visit of the 20-strong United delegation, which was at the grave of Franz Beckenbauer in the Perlach cemetery laid flower wreaths.

Franz Roth and Franz Beckenbauer were active for FC Bayern

Roth was a long-time Bayern teammate of Beckenbauer and scored the decisive 1-0 win against Leeds United when Munich took part in the final of the 1975 national championship cup.

Bayern ultimately won the final 2-0.

“That will never be forgotten,” remembers Roth, who is seen shaking hands with Mike Phelan in a picture.

The 61-year-old played 134 times for United during his active career and was assistant coach there until June 2022.

Phelan was part of the Red Devils group that made its way to Munich.

The relationship between FC Bayern and Manchester United is “unique and a relationship forever,” said Phelan.

“They are two great clubs with personalities like Bobby Charlton and Franz Beckenbauer, who were role models for people all over the world, as sportsmen and also off the pitch.”
