Shock in the sports world.
The world record holder in the marathon, Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum, died last night (Sunday) in a car accident together with his coach.
His wife Joan Chelimo confirmed his death, which happened while traveling on the Eldrot-Kaptagat road in Kenya.
Kiptom broke the world record at the Chicago Marathon on October 8, setting it at 2 hours 35 seconds, 34 seconds faster than Eliud Kipchoga's previous record.
Last year he also won the London Marathon, where he achieved the second best result of all time as of that time - 2:01.25 hours.
He won the title of athlete of the year in the world.
Kiptom was driving a Toyota Premio with his coach Gervais from Mizmana, with another female passenger in the car.
It is not clear what happened, but there was no other vehicle involved in the accident.
The female passenger emerged from the collision with serious injuries, while the two passengers in front were killed.
