Oberhausen – On Saturday (February 10th), junior basketball player Volodymyr Yermakov was stabbed to death at Willy-Brandt-Platz in Oberhausen.
The knife attack was probably triggered by a previous argument between two groups of young people.
The victim was a young player from the ART Giants Düsseldorf
As the Düsseldorf basketball club ART Giants reported on Monday (February 12) in a message about the tragic incident on Facebook, the Ukrainian Yermakov only fled from his home to Düsseldorf in July 2023.
“Volodymyr was very popular with coaches, teammates and friends.
“We will remember a young person whose everyday life was characterized by pure joy of life and sporting ambition,” the club continued in its statement.
However, Yermakov was not the only victim of the altercation.
As the ART Giants announced, his teammate Artem Kozachenko was also involved in the attack.
He is currently in the hospital and is being treated there.
Arrest warrant issued against 15-year-old
After the altercation, the perpetrators fled undetected.
However, the police search was quickly successful and two suspects were arrested on Sunday morning.
“They are a 15-year-old from Gelsenkirchen and a 14-year-old from Herne, both of whom have already made significant criminal appearances,” according to police information.
An arrest warrant was issued against the older of the two arrested for manslaughter and grievous bodily harm.
