Kylian Mbappé informed Paris Saint-Germain this Tuesday that he will not continue at the club after June 30, when his contract ends, as EL PAÍS was able to confirm from sources familiar with the conversation.
Last summer, the French player had already sent a letter to PSG in which he refused to activate the possibility of extending his contract until June 30, 2025. However, in recent months he had shown that there was an option to continue in Paris beyond this summer, and that the club would be the first to know its decision.
That happened on Saturday, on the eve of the Champions League match against Real Sociedad.
Mbappé will leave PSG at the end of this season.
This communication is part of the agreement reached at the end of this summer between the footballer and the club president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, after the deep crisis that opened the letter in which he told them that he would not activate the clause in his contract that allowed him an extra season.
At that moment, PSG felt betrayed.
He considered that the player was leaving after pocketing enormous amounts of money and without leaving anything in the box as a sale.
Sources familiar with the financial details assure that Mbappé represents a gross annual cost of 200 million euros.
Al-Khelaifi then decided to exclude the player from the team's Asian tour, who stayed in the Paris sports city exercising with the players considered "expendable."
In addition, he announced that Mbappé was for sale, although it was something that went against the will of the player, who had publicly assured that he wanted to stay in Paris.
The footballer remained away from the team's activities until he met with Al-Khelaifi in mid-August and agreed with him not to leave without leaving anything at the club.
When Mbappé has spoken about this pact in public, he has said that it was a formula that protected both parties against a possible departure at the end of this season.
That day, before the league match against Lorient, they agreed to peace in exchange for the footballer giving up around 80 million euros in bonuses that were included in his contract.
The completion of this resignation, or a different compensation formula so that the departure is not completely “free”, is one of the points that still must be agreed between the club and the footballer.
When they close that part of the agreement, in the coming months, PSG and Mbappé will make a joint communication.
