With Engels, TSV 1860 has a new squad planner and a new strategy.

The contracts of Lakenmacher, Verlaat and Ouro-Tagba are expiring.

Will the squad be shaken up?

Munich – What our newspaper reported the previous week has been perfect since Wednesday.

Stephan Engels will now support TSV 1860 on a part-time basis as a squad planner.

The 32-year-old previously worked as chief scout at third division rival SC Verl and will work closely with sports director Christian Werner (42) at the Lions.

“We will present the loyal Lions fans with a quick-witted and successful squad.”

Stephen Engels, squad planner at TSV 1860 Munich, promises a powerful team.

“I’m really looking forward to the task and am happy to be part of the lion family in the future,” says Engels.

“Together with the existing team, we will manage to present the loyal Lions fans with a quick-witted and successful squad that will bring joy to everyone.”

Engels, who will not move to Munich for the time being but will be at the games on the weekends, plays a key role.

Unlike chief scout Jürgen Jung (48), who with his department naturally does not fish for potential reinforcements in the company's own pond but in foreign waters, Engels, as the overarching "mastermind", always has his own squad and the scouting department's suggestions in mind.

Engels is supposed to develop his own lion DNA at TSV 1860

“It’s an extremely important position,” explains Werner.

“We have the opportunity to look at markets together.

The chief scout looks around externally – and the squad planner checks where the external players stand in comparison to our own.” Based on our own DNA.

With Engels, Sixty is positioning itself more broadly on the sporting command bridge because the club wants to develop its own game idea in the long term.

“Lion football with recognition value” is how Werner described the project in a recent interview with us.

Aligning a squad based on a game idea - this is exactly how Engels gained valuable experience at his former club Verl, which he will now bring to Munich.

“Verl stands for working with clear requirement profiles,” says Werner.

Such a construct is fundamentally relatively independent of fluctuations.

What Werner means: If a player or the coach leaves the club, the club or the squad planner already has one or more successor candidates - internally and externally - on their list.

According to this scheme, Verl managed to react quickly to the departure of top scorer Oliver Batista Meier (to Zurich).

He had barely left when his successor, Marco Mannhardt (signed from regional league team Illertissen), was already on the mat.

Treaties of Verlaat, Lakenmacher and Ouro-Tagba expire in 1860

“Stephan Engels has contributed well, he fits in well with our way of working,” enthuses Werner.

“He will support our excellent scouting team around Jürgen Jung.” As sports director, Werner himself is ultimately responsible for contract negotiations.

And there is a lot of work to do for the Hesse native.

The contracts of several top performers (including captain Jesper Verlaat, striker Fynn Lakenmacher and young hopeful Mansour Ouro-Tagba) will end in the summer.

Does Engels have to manage a complete upheaval right away?
