Eight white wine spritzers, two cocktails and the steering wheel: Andi Brehme made a big mistake.
Before his death, he spoke honestly about it and expressed remorse.
Munich – The sudden death of Andi Brehme shocked the football world.
Just 32 days earlier, he laid roses at the memorial service for the late Franz Beckenbauer - now the two legends are playing football in heaven.
Like Beckenbauer, Brehme can also look back on an eventful career full of successes.
Of course, his penalty goal to win the 1990 World Cup stood out. But there is something else that unites the former left-back with Beckenbauer: After his playing career, there was not only light but also shadow.
Andreas Brehme was behind the wheel with a blood alcohol level of 1.78
In an interview with
Stern
some time ago, Brehme spoke about perhaps his biggest mistake: driving while drunk, which cost him dearly.
“I was caught with a blood alcohol level of 1.78.
At a TV station party, I drank eight white wine spritzers and two Long Island Ice Teas and then, idiotically, I drove home,” said the late football hero ruefully.
The consequence of the evening: “Driver’s license lost, 30,000 euros fine.” Afterward, Brehme speaks of a “serious mistake.”
That one opened his eyes; he wanted to help others who had made the same mistake.
“An acquaintance who ran an MPU school gave me a course and offered me to join his company.
When I passed the MPU test, I said yes,” Brehme revealed.

“You have to question your life”: Andi Brehme learned from a serious mistake
Every now and then, the native of Hamburg would tell the course participants his story in his adopted home of Munich.
“I know how you feel when you find yourself in a situation like that.
You’ll get a huge kick out of yourself,” he said.
The world champion drew his conclusions from this: “It takes some time until you realize that driving drunk is not just a mistake, but that you have to question your life and change it.”
