Funeral service for Franz Beckenbauer in the Allianz Arena

First report from January 19th:

Munich – Thousands of people said goodbye to Franz Beckenbauer in the Munich Allianz Arena.

Among the mourners were, for example, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Prime Minister Markus Söder and the Bundesliga team FC Bayern Munich.

At the beginning of the memorial service, long-time companions Rainer Bonhof, Andreas Brehme, Paul Breitner, Lothar Matthäus, Günter Netzer, Wolfgang Overath, Franz Roth, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Georg Schwarzenbeck, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Berti Vogts entered the lawn to represent Franz Beckenbauer to honor everyone.

Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann sang “Con te partirò”, the Italian version of “Time to say goodbye.”

He had special moments in his life with each of these eleven companions.

Some of them celebrated titles with the German national team, such as winning the 1972 European Championships and the 1974 World Cup as a player and the 1990 World Cup as a coach.

With the majority of the eleven, he also had successful years at FC Bayern Munich - as a player, coach and president.

In addition to Beckenbauer's eleven companions, the other mourners in the stadium also listened to the moving speeches.

“This is where FC Bayern is at home and this is where Franz will always be at home.

FC Bayern will always remain an empire, forever.

Dear Franz, I thank you immeasurably for everything.

You will remain in our hearts and in our game forever,” said Bayern President Herbert Hainer in tribute to the deceased.

Uli Hoeneß's speech was particularly emotional: “What I always really liked about Franz was his ability to take care of others.

If you had a problem, you went to Franz. That was one of his most important qualities.

He was also endlessly generous.”
